We do see larger bodies in naked dresses, but far less often than in fashion coverage, runway shows, or red-carpet photography. The gap comes mainly from how the fashion industry makes and sells these garments: samples are cut in a handful of small sizes, retail size ranges for sheer and illusion pieces are narrow, and casting favors the same body types. Social pressure around showing skin and unequal scrutiny of bodies add to the pattern. None of this shows that larger people do not want to wear naked dresses or cannot wear them.
What “naked dress” actually covers
The term describes a family of garments that look like exposure without fully showing the body. That includes sheer fabrics, skin-toned illusion layers, cutouts, close-fitting silhouettes, and embellishment or construction that reveals and conceals at once. The effect depends on the garment, the wearer, the styling, and the setting, which is why the same dress can read as bold on one body and conservative on another.
A scholarly analysis by Lara Maleen Kipp, published online in December 2022 in the journal Fashion, Style & Popular Culture and in a 2025 issue, treats this apparent nudity as a carefully constructed performance with a long history rather than unmediated nakedness. That framing matters for the question. If the look is engineered, then who it is engineered for, and on whom it is built, are design decisions and not accidents of nature.
Why bigger bodies are rarely in the frame
Reporting from Marie Claire on the naked dress trend describes fuller figures as rarely represented in these garments, and says the options for trying the trend are limited by size. The explanation that holds up best in the coverage is one of access and visibility reinforcing each other, rather than one single cause.

Sample sizes decide what gets shown
Model and size-inclusion advocate Lauren Chan, quoted by Marie Claire, says the trend is most accessible to people who fit sample sizes. She notes that fashion houses commonly make one sample in a size two or four. Those samples are what editors style, photograph, and send down the runway, so the images that define a trend are built on a narrow range of bodies before any customer sees the garment.
Retail size ranges restrict who can try them
Even when a naked dress reaches stores, it may not be produced in extended sizes. Chan’s point is that the trend could reach more people if brands began producing more sizes, but she frames the shortage as a long-running issue that fashion has not solved. For a shopper, this means the problem appears at the checkout page as well as on the catwalk: a size chart that stops at a certain number ends the search before fit or styling is ever considered.
Casting and styling follow the samples
Once sample garments are made in small sizes, casting and fittings tend to follow the same pattern. Editorial styling then reinforces what readers see most. This is a production-and-visibility explanation. The reporting supports it, but it does not establish that every designer deliberately excludes larger customers.

Social pressure and unequal scrutiny
Stylist Kelly Augustine, who works with clients outside sample size, told Marie Claire she likes the look of the trend and wants to see it on runways and red carpets. Marie Claire’s narration adds that plus-size bodies have historically been discouraged from showing skin, and that Augustine would like to see fuller figures in naked dresses more often. That sentence is reporting, not a direct quote from Augustine.
The coverage also describes different wearers facing different scrutiny or sexualization. A thin body in sheer fabric is often read as fashion; a larger body in the same garment can be read as a statement, a provocation, or a target. These are social pressures and unequal expectations. They are not rules about what anyone may wear, but they explain why some people may choose to stay with less revealing styles even when they like the trend.
What the runway numbers show, and what they do not
Vogue India, citing Vogue Business, reports that the share of runway shows featuring a plus-size model fell from 11.5% to 4.6% over two seasons. That figure appears in a Vogue India article dated March 18, 2026, and it is attributed to Vogue Business. It measures runway casting. It does not count how many naked dresses are worn by larger bodies, and it cannot explain why a particular designer made a casting decision.

Read together with the production evidence, it suggests the visibility gap is not a quirk of one season or one trend. It is a broader pattern in what the industry chooses to show, measured in one specific setting.
Larger-bodied wearers have worn them
Naked dresses have a longer history than the current trend label suggests. Vogue’s April 8, 2022 feature, “The Best Naked Dresses to Shop Now—Plus, a Brief History of the Trend,” traces illusion dresses and high-profile examples across decades. Kipp’s scholarly analysis covers naked and nude-illusion dresses from historical celebrity dress to contemporary cases, and interprets them through gender, celebrity, desirability, and performance.

The Washington Post essay “What the ‘naked dress’ exposes,” published September 6, 2022, names Lizzo wearing a purple naked dress as an example of a plus-size wearer using the style to challenge expectations about beauty and the body. Examples like this matter. The accurate description is that larger bodies are less visible in these garments, not that they are never seen in them.

Individual motivation also varies. Marie Claire quotes women who describe self-acceptance and dressing for their own gaze as their reasons for wearing the style. Other people may prefer to watch the trend from the outside or choose not to wear it at all. No single example, celebrity or otherwise, speaks for larger-bodied people as a group.
Three axes to keep separate
Casting, retail access, and garment design are often blended in conversation, but they work differently and call for different evidence. Keeping them apart makes it clearer where the gap actually sits.

What the evidence does not establish
- A count of larger-bodied people who wear naked dresses. The reporting describes the trend qualitatively.
- A causal study of designers’ decisions about sizing or casting.
- A representative survey of what larger-bodied consumers want from the trend.
- Universal preferences. Celebrity examples and comments from fashion professionals illustrate possibilities; they do not establish what most people want.
Those gaps are the reason to treat the explanation above as an industry pattern, supported by specific reporting, rather than a complete account of every designer, retailer, or wearer.

Practical checks before you buy
If you want to try the look and the size range is the barrier, a few checks can save time:
- Start with the size chart, not the product photo. Confirm the highest size listed and whether it matches the measurements you need.
- Check whether the illusion panel or sheer layer is produced in the same size as the rest of the garment. Some pieces are sized in separate components.
- Look for brands that state their extended-size range explicitly rather than implying it through a model’s size.
- Confirm current inventory before relying on any size listing, since extended sizes often sell out or are discontinued.
Shopping for these pieces is a matter of checking the sizing information the seller publishes. A product page cannot substitute for the broader explanation of why the category is hard to fit.
Seen, but not yet common
Larger bodies do appear in naked dresses, and the trend’s history includes wearers who have used the look to challenge assumptions about beauty and visibility. The reason they are seen less often is structural. Samples are cut small, extended sizes are scarce, and runway casting has moved away from representation in the most recent seasons reported. Those are industry choices that can change, and the reporting consulted here shows at least some stylists and advocates pushing for that change.
