Daenerys executes Varys because he conspires to put Jon Snow on the Iron Throne—and the episode strongly implies he is also trying to poison her. Tyrion reveals Varys’s betrayal, after which Daenerys orders Drogon to burn him. The execution happens before the attack on King’s Landing and before the bells ring.
What did Varys do to betray Daenerys?
Varys decides that Jon Snow would be a better ruler and a safer choice for the realm. Jon’s true parentage makes him a rival claimant to the Iron Throne, and Varys begins spreading the truth about Jon’s Targaryen identity. He is not merely voicing doubts about Daenerys: he is working to replace her.
The episode also strongly suggests Varys is attempting to poison Daenerys. He asks one of his young informants whether the queen has eaten and tells her to try again later when she says Daenerys has not. The scene implies a poisoning plot, though it does not show Varys explicitly giving an order to poison her.
How does Daenerys learn about the plot?
Tyrion tells Daenerys that Varys has betrayed her. When Varys is taken to the shore, Tyrion admits that he was the one who informed on him. Daenerys sentences Varys to die, and Drogon carries out the execution with dragonfire.

Why did Varys think Jon should rule?
Varys believes his actions serve the realm rather than his own safety or allegiance to a particular ruler. He supports Jon because he considers him the better choice to govern. The scene presents a clash between loyalty to a sovereign and Varys’s own judgment about what would protect the people; he is prepared to face death if his judgment proves wrong.
Did Varys die before Daenerys attacked King’s Landing?
Yes. Varys is executed before the assault on King’s Landing and before the bells ring to signal the city’s surrender. His death is a consequence of his conspiracy against Daenerys, not a reaction to the surrender or to the destruction that follows.

How does Daenerys’s isolation fit into the scene?
Daenerys’s decision comes amid mounting losses and mistrust: she has lost close allies, Missandei has been executed, and Jon’s claim complicates both her bid for the throne and their relationship. In post-episode commentary reported by ABC News Australia, co-creator David Benioff described Daenerys as isolated after people close to her had died or turned against her. That context helps explain her state of mind, but the immediate reason she kills Varys is his active effort to undermine and replace her.
Benioff’s comments about Daenerys’s wider turn should not be mistaken for a separate explanation of Varys’s execution. Likewise, co-creator D.B. Weiss’s remark in the same report about Daenerys making the destruction of King’s Landing personal refers to a later moment, after Varys is dead. The execution can also be read thematically as a sign that Daenerys is increasingly relying on fear, but that is an interpretation of the scene rather than its immediate plot explanation.
