The show gave Coach separate explanations for his moves in the story, and the character later returned for the season 5 finale.
Why Damon Wayans Jr. left after the pilot
Wayans played Coach in the 2011 pilot, but ABC renewed Happy Endings for a second season, keeping him committed to that series. Rather than remove him from the pilot, New Girl kept the episode intact and introduced Lamorne Morris as Winston, a new character—not a recast Coach. The sitcom explained Coach’s first departure by saying his sublet had ended. TV Guide reported the circumstances of the pilot and the decision to retain it.
Why Coach returned in season 3
After Happy Endings was canceled, Wayans could return. The initial plan was for a four-episode appearance, but the run expanded to the rest of season 3, with Wayans credited as a special guest star. In the story, Coach came back after breaking up with the girlfriend he had been living with. Wayans described the return as feeling like “my second home”, and TV Guide reported that he would stay for the remainder of the season.
Why he left again after season 4
Wayans became a series regular for season 4, then opted to leave at the end of that season, according to TVLine’s February 2015 report. Wayans expressed gratitude for the chance to return and for working with the cast and crew. Creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether said the writers were developing an exit that would leave the door open for future appearances.

What happened to Coach in the story
The sitcom’s explanations track Coach’s moves, not Wayans’s reasons for leaving the production. His sublet ended before the pilot’s events continued; after his season 3 return and breakup, he stayed through season 4. In the season 4 finale, Coach packed to move to New York City. That destination was the character’s plot, not a stated explanation for the actor’s decision to exit.

Yes. Fox’s announcement of the show’s sixth-season renewal listed Wayans among the guest stars returning in the season 5 finale. That later appearance fits Meriwether’s stated intention to keep the door open for Coach to return. Fox’s renewal announcement confirms the season 5 finale appearance.
