A secondary compilation says he voluntarily surrendered his Texas license that year. The same compilation describes an earlier Texas board matter involving an inappropriate dual relationship with a former patient, but it does not establish that this matter caused the later surrender. A separate California licensing question concerned whether his television work required a California license.
What happened to Dr. Phil’s Texas license?
A Quackwatch compilation attributed to Texas board records reports that McGraw voluntarily surrendered his Texas psychology license in 2006. That description is materially different from saying the board revoked or stripped him of the license. The underlying surrender instrument was not available in the material reviewed, so the exact terms and explanation for the surrender are not established here. Quackwatch’s account is secondary reporting, not the original board document.
Was the surrender caused by an earlier board action?
The same compilation describes an earlier Texas board matter concerning an inappropriate dual relationship with a former patient. It does not establish that the earlier matter was the stated reason for the 2006 surrender. Without the original board order and surrender document, those events should be reported separately rather than treated as one disciplinary action.
What was the California licensing issue?
A secondary account says California’s Board of Psychology concluded in 2002 that McGraw’s television work did not require a California psychology license. That is a different issue from the later-reported surrender of his Texas license. The original California determination is not available here, so its precise wording and basis cannot be confirmed. The Los Angeles Times account reports the California issue.

Does surrendering a license mean losing a psychology doctorate?
No. An academic doctorate and a state license to practice are different credentials. Texas law states: “A person may not engage in or represent that the person is engaged in the practice of psychology unless the person is licensed under this chapter or exempt under Section 501.004.” The Texas Board of Examiners of Psychologists oversees licensing qualifications, renewals, and ethical standards in the state. Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 501 explain the state framework.
How can readers check a psychologist’s current Texas status?
The reported history does not establish McGraw’s present-day license status in Texas or any other state. Texas says its online license verification provides status and available disciplinary history and constitutes primary-source verification. Its guidance also says a person whose license expired, was retired, revoked, or resigned must apply for reinstatement to reactivate it; that general rule is not evidence that McGraw has applied. Texas license verification information describes the public lookup.
