Anakin Skywalker kills the younglings in the Jedi Temple because Palpatine has ordered him to destroy the Jedi and prove himself in the dark side. The order is explicit. Anakin’s fear that Padmé will die gives Palpatine his leverage, and by that point Anakin has already chosen Palpatine and the dark side. The film, however, does not give him a separate personal motive against the children, and it does not show the killing on screen. The scene cuts away, and the violence is implied.
What Palpatine orders
Revenge of the Sith (2005), written and directed by George Lucas, puts the Temple attack at the center of Anakin’s turn. In the screenplay, Palpatine sends Anakin to the Jedi Temple with instructions to move quickly, show no mercy, and prove himself in the dark side. Palpatine presents the attack as necessary: the Jedi must be destroyed to prevent a continuing civil war.
That command is the direct cause. It names the Jedi as the target. It does not single out the younglings as a separate group Anakin is to hunt, and the screenplay does not have Palpatine address the children at all. The children are killed as part of the assault on the Temple.
Why Anakin goes along: fear for Padmé
Lucasfilm’s official synopsis describes Anakin as fearful for his pregnant wife’s safety, tempted by the dark side, and haunted by visions of her death. Those pressures are the emotional groundwork for his choice. Lucasfilm’s retrospective on the film also presents Padmé’s possible death as the central fear behind his turn.

The film’s window scene, as Lucasfilm recounts it, shows Palpatine offering the one thing Anakin wants: the possibility of saving Padmé through dark power. Lucasfilm also reproduces a note on Lucas’s direction to Hayden Christensen, that Anakin believes telling the Jedi that Palpatine is a Sith will cause Padmé’s death. That belief is what makes Palpatine’s leverage work. It explains how Anakin came to obey, and it is an interpretation of the story’s emotional logic rather than a line of dialogue in which Anakin explains his reasons.
Two things should be kept apart. The command to destroy the Jedi is stated outright. Fear for Padmé is the context that makes obedience possible. The film does not narrate Anakin’s private thoughts at the moment he faces the younglings.

What the film shows and what it leaves implied
In the screenplay, Anakin arrives at the Temple and one of the children addresses him as “Master Skywalker.” The scene then cuts away. Later in the film, Bail Organa reports seeing clones kill younglings, and Obi-Wan concludes that Anakin has turned to the dark side. The film therefore implies Anakin’s violence toward the children and establishes it through dialogue and consequence. It does not show the act graphically.
When describing the scene, the accurate phrasing is that Anakin kills the younglings, or that the film implies he does, and that he does so because he has been ordered to destroy the Jedi and has turned. Stating that the film shows him killing them in detail, or that it reveals a hatred of children or a grudge against them, goes beyond the evidence.

What the people who made the film have said
- George Lucas, as recounted by Lucasfilm writer and historian Lucas O. Seastrom, described the dramatic premise of the window scene: “You realize that by telling the Jedi about Palpatine being a Sith that Padmé is going to die. Basically, you just killed her.”
- Hayden Christensen, on reading the child-killing scene in the script, called it “a necessary evil, all the Jedi have to go, even the children.” This is Christensen’s own description of Anakin’s role in the plot. It is not Anakin’s dialogue, and it is not a separate statement from Lucas.
- Obi-Wan Kenobi, in a line Lucasfilm quotes on its official film page: “You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them!” The line captures the moral reversal of the film, but it is not an explanation of the younglings specifically.
Lucasfilm’s twentieth-anniversary set diary also reports that eight youngling performers filmed a Jedi Council scene and that Lucas coached them before takes. That is behind-the-scenes production context. It does not explain Anakin’s motive.
Interpretations compared
The official sources do not offer competing explanations for the killings. Readers who encounter different theories usually differ on which of three questions they are answering:

| Question | What the film establishes | What the film leaves open |
|---|---|---|
| Direct cause | Palpatine orders Anakin to destroy the Jedi, move quickly, and show no mercy. | Whether the younglings are singled out as targets. The order names the Jedi, not the children. |
| Emotional leverage | Anakin fears Padmé will die, and Palpatine offers a way to save her. | Anakin’s precise private reasoning at the moment he faces the children. |
| Stated versus implied | The command and Anakin’s turn are explicit. | The killings themselves: the scene cuts away, and the violence is implied through later dialogue. |
The novelization as optional reading
Matthew Stover wrote the novelization, Revenge of the Sith: Star Wars: Episode III (ISBN 9780593974803), published by Penguin Random House. In a publisher interview, Stover says he discussed “the specifics of Anakin’s fall” with Lucas and that his book goes beyond a direct transposition of the film. Material from the novel is expanded story detail. It is not film dialogue or on-screen explanation, and readers should treat it as such.
