Boston Blue recast Sean Reagan because its co-creators said the spinoff opens a new chapter in the character’s life and called for a different performance energy. Mika Amonsen replaced Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean on Blue Bloods. The creators’ published explanations are creative. None of the interviews cited here mention scheduling, availability, or a dispute.
What the creators said
Three interviews from the weeks around the Boston Blue premiere carry the creators’ reasoning. Together they give a consistent account.
A “very new chapter” in Sean’s life
Speaking to TVLine around the October 17, 2025 premiere, co-creator Brandon Margolis explained the thinking this way: once the team realized it was telling “a very new chapter in this character’s life,” it made creative sense to find an actor “with a different energy.” He said Amonsen’s performance still calls back to Sean’s vulnerabilities, but brings a youthful energy that takes the character in a new direction.
“A slightly different version of Sean”
In a TV Insider interview published October 20, 2025, Margolis said: “We wanted a slightly different version of Sean.” He described two goals. The first was a character who felt familiar. The second was an actor who resembled the character viewers had watched grow up. He added that Sean had made life changes in the pilot and, by joining the police force, was “really picking up that family mantle.”

The phrase “join the story in progress” also appears in that interview. It explains why the creators wanted the new performer to feel established quickly rather than settling in over several episodes.
Parade’s corroborating account
A Parade interview dated October 18, 2025 gives the same reasoning from a slightly different angle. Margolis said the creators loved Terraciano’s work and had watched him grow up on Blue Bloods. They nonetheless felt that a different performer’s energy suited a new chapter and direction for Sean.

Why the new Sean had to arrive quickly
The recast was not just a question of tone. The pilot’s structure made it necessary to establish the new Sean early:
- Sean is a rookie Boston police officer, and he is gravely injured after helping at a fire in the opening act.
- That heroic act is what draws Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, into the Boston story.
- Danny travels to Boston, reconnects with his son, and stays to look out for him.
- The series uses that event to widen Danny’s role from son and sibling to father and mentor. A 2026 Television Academy retrospective describes this father-mentor story as the show’s main emotional engine.
Because the central event happens in the first episode, the audience meets the new performer while the story is already moving. The creators’ stated goal was to have that performer carry the character from the start.

Terraciano’s response
Terraciano’s public reaction was generous. He said another performer could do something beautiful with the character, and described playing Sean as a joy. He put it this way: “It doesn’t mean for even a second that somebody else can’t go and do something beautiful with it.” That is his own view of the handoff. It is not the creators’ reason for casting Amonsen, and the two should not be merged.
What the sources do not establish
Several explanations circulate about why a series regular changes hands. The interviews cited here support none of the following:

- That the recast was caused by Terraciano’s scheduling or availability.
- That Terraciano declined the role or was offered it on Boston Blue.
- That Terraciano left acting.
- That a network mandate drove the decision.
- That a behind-the-scenes dispute was involved.
The only on-record reasons are the creative ones described above: a new life stage for Sean and a different performance energy.

The short version for readers
The change was a creative decision the creators tied to Sean’s move into police work. They wanted a performer whose energy matched a new chapter for the character. Terraciano’s exit is publicly framed as a handoff, and his response was supportive. Nothing published in these interviews indicates a logistical or contractual cause.
