He is an outsider and a writer who wants into the Upper East Side world he watches, and an anonymous blog gives him a way in and a way to shape how that world sees itself. The weak point is the series itself. The reveal holds up as theme better than it holds up as mystery, and the show’s own writers have said so.
The case for Dan: an outsider who writes
The core argument is social position. Dan comes from outside the wealthy circle he observes, and Gossip Girl gives him an unusual route into that circle. Joshua Safran, an original-series writer and producer, explained the character this way: Dan “wanted to find a way in” to the “cool” crowd, as The Independent reported in July 2021.
The simplest defence is the one Penn Badgley, who played Dan, gave in a 2015 Vanity Fair piece by Joanna Robinson: “He was a writer.” A writer watching people from the edges, recording what they do and then publishing it, fits the anonymous blogger role without strain.
The idea also gives Dan’s outsider gaze a second function. The person who seems to be documenting the elite is also the person deciding how they are seen by one another. Gossip Girl is both his entry point and a tool for shaping the group’s reputation. This is an interpretation built on the character’s motives, not a diagnosis the writers offered, but it is the strongest reading of why the secret feels right in retrospect.

What the finale does with the secret
Stephanie Savage, an executive producer, described one concrete plot function in a December 2012 TVLine interview with Michael Ausiello. In her account, the story the writers wanted to tell was that Dan let Nate break the Gossip Girl story, and that scoop helped launch Nate’s newspaper, The Spectator.
That gives the reveal a practical payoff. Dan’s identity puts the final disclosure in his hands, and Nate converts the disclosure into a career move. The blog becomes a conventional media asset, and the outsider who could never buy his way into the group ends up with a say in its story. This is a mechanism in the finale. It does not show that every earlier post was a calculated step by Dan.

Two accounts of when the choice was made
The production record is not unified, and the two main accounts should be read side by side rather than merged.
Savage: Dan was always the answer
Asked when Dan was chosen, Savage told TVLine in 2012: “I don’t think we ever had another choice in our mind. It was always just a question of were we going to reveal it or not to reveal it.” She also said the production did not discuss the idea with the actors and did not want the audience focused on it.

Safran: the reveal was not the starting plan
Safran’s later account, given to Vanity Fair in July 2021, complicates that picture. He said: “Of course it doesn’t fully sustain itself because we didn’t expect to even reveal who Gossip Girl was.” He added: “So, of course it doesn’t line up because it wasn’t like we started on day one and said, ‘Dan is Gossip Girl.'”
The fair reading is narrower than “the twist was planned from episode one.” Savage recalled Dan as the intended identity. Safran said the reveal was not the original plan and that the show did not consistently sustain it. Both can be true: Dan may have been the favoured answer long before the team committed to revealing the secret at all.

Where the episodes strain the answer
The strongest objection is on screen. TVLine asked Savage about scenes in which Dan sits alone reading Gossip Girl blasts and appears surprised. She said the writers did not want to lean into the identity or make viewers think about it. Vanity Fair’s 2015 piece also pointed to the awkwardness of Dan writing about himself in the third person and of the harsh posts about Serena.
These are two different tests, and the argument works only if they are kept apart:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Character plausibility: Dan’s outsider status and his job as a writer make him a credible blogger. He passes this test.
- Mystery mechanics: Episodes that play Dan as if he were not the blogger strain the serial’s internal logic. Safran’s own admission that the reveal did not fully sustain itself is the clearest sign that this test was not met cleanly.
A reader can accept the first and still conclude the second was failed. That is the honest position.
Nate as the alternative
Safran has said he wanted Nate to be Gossip Girl. In his account, the team kept Nate in consideration through the end of his involvement, and the idea was set up during season five. The motive he described was Nate’s guilt over sleeping with Serena, which pushed Nate to create an alter ego that drew the group together. Safran also said clues pointed toward Nate, while calling the Nate path “not as organic as Dan.”
Because this is a retrospective account of an abandoned plan, it should be treated as a counterfactual, not as aired canon. Its value is comparative. It shows what Dan’s version adds.
| Comparison point | Dan as Gossip Girl | Nate as Gossip Girl (Safran’s account) |
|---|---|---|
| Core motive | Wanting a way into the “cool” crowd, per Safran (The Independent, 2021) | Guilt over sleeping with Serena, which led to an alter ego that drew the group together, per Safran (The Independent, 2021) |
| Relationship to the group | An outsider who shapes how the elite is seen | A insider whose guilt drives the anonymous channel |
| Status in production | Recalled by Savage as the intended identity (TVLine, 2012) | Considered through the end of Safran’s involvement, with the idea set up in season five (per Safran) |
| Finale payoff | Lets Dan control the reveal and enables Nate’s Spectator scoop (Savage, TVLine, 2012) | Not stated in the sourced account |
| Organic fit, per Safran | Described as the more organic path | Described as “not as organic as Dan” |
Verdict
Dan makes sense as Gossip Girl once you accept what the character is for: an outsider who writes, wants in, and gains power by narrating the people he cannot join. The finale turns that into a neat exchange, with Dan controlling the disclosure and Nate getting the story. The show, though, did not keep that logic consistent in its scenes, and its own writers said as much. The idea is coherent in retrospect. The plotting was not airtight.
