Chris Von Erich is not in The Iron Claw because writer-director Sean Durkin cut him from the screenplay. Durkin had included Chris in earlier drafts, but he concluded that another death would repeat the film’s central tragedy and overwhelm its emotional structure. According to Durkin, parts of Chris’s story were folded into the character of Mike. His explanation was reported in a December 20, 2023 interview with the Los Angeles Times.
What the film leaves out
The Iron Claw is an A24 film from 2023, written and directed by Sean Durkin. It follows the Von Erich wrestling family in the early 1980s and centers on Kevin, David, Kerry, and Mike. Chris, the youngest of the brothers, does not appear as a character in the finished film.

Chris was a real member of the family and a professional wrestler. The Los Angeles Times describes him as someone who pursued wrestling but struggled to match his brothers’ success, and reports that his stature and health conditions hindered his ambitions. He died by suicide in 1991 at age 21. His absence from the film is an adaptation decision, not evidence that he was invented or left out of the family’s history.
Durkin’s reasons for cutting him
The problem of repetition
Durkin’s main argument is that the story already contains a series of devastating losses, and adding Chris’s death would make the film feel repetitive. He told the Los Angeles Times:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches#1 Best Overall
“There was a repetition to it, and it was one more tragedy that the film couldn’t really withstand.”
In the same interview, Durkin described removing Chris as an “impossible choice” and said he struggled with it for several years before deciding it served the narrative. The reasoning is about balance. A film built around grief and its consequences risks losing its force if each new death becomes another beat in the same pattern.

The emotional structure of the film
Durkin’s own framing for A24 focuses less on the sequence of tragedies than on how the family responds to them. He wrote that “Although there is unthinkable loss within the Von Erich family, The Iron Claw is not about grief and pain, it’s about the absence of grief and what can happen when people refuse to examine their pain.” He also described the film as a story about family, masculinity, fathers and sons, and brotherhood.
Seen this way, Chris’s death would not add a new idea. It would add another loss to a film whose subject is how the brothers avoid processing the losses they already have. That is the director’s stated reasoning, and it is the basis for the cut.

Where Chris’s story went
Durkin has said that aspects of Chris’s story were folded into Mike. The phrasing matters. Mike is not a literal composite of every detail of Chris’s life, and the film does not present him as Chris under another name. Durkin’s claim is narrower: some of the emotional material and experiences tied to Chris were given to Mike so that the film could keep its focus on four brothers rather than five.
If you are comparing the movie with the family’s history, treat Mike’s storyline as a dramatic choice that combines material, not as a one-to-one account of any single person.

Reading the film against the family history
A few points help when you compare the film with the real Von Erich story:
- Chris existed and wrestled. His absence is a narrative choice.
- Chris was in early drafts. He was written out during development, not left out from the start.
- The reason is Durkin’s. The explanation of repetition and emotional balance comes from the director, not from an independent account of the production.
- The death date and age are documented. Chris died in 1991 at age 21, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
The film is a dramatization built around four brothers. Questions about how accurately it portrays other events or people in the family’s history are separate from the question of why Chris is missing, and they are best answered by reading the film’s own framing alongside biographical reporting.

Why this matters for viewers
Viewers who notice Chris’s absence often assume the filmmakers were hiding part of the family’s history. The director’s explanation points to a different reading: the film chose to treat the family’s losses as a pattern rather than a complete record. Knowing that makes the movie’s structure easier to read. Each death is meant to deepen the theme of silence and unexamined pain, and Chris’s story, had it been included as a separate tragedy, would have changed the film’s emphasis.
