At the Festival of Remembrance in London on 9 November 2024, Catherine, Princess of Wales—widely known as Kate Middleton—appeared emotional during a standing ovation for World War II troops, according to PEOPLE. The report did not establish what she was feeling or why; the moment should be described as an observed impression, not a confirmed account of her private emotions.
What happened at the Festival of Remembrance?
Catherine attended the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday, 9 November 2024, with Prince William, King Charles, Princess Anne and other working royals. PEOPLE reported that she appeared emotional during a standing ovation for World War II troops. “Appeared” is important: the coverage describes how she looked in that moment, not what she said she felt.
The Festival is a Royal British Legion event held on the Saturday before Remembrance Sunday. Its programme brings together music, military displays and commemoration; the Royal Family says it raises funds for veterans and their families. The Royal Family’s event guide explains the annual occasion, while its 2023 recap describes performers, veterans, serving Armed Forces members and members of the public gathering at the Royal Albert Hall.
Why was Catherine emotional?
The available reporting does not establish a cause. The standing ovation was for World War II troops, but it would be speculation to say that this, her health, or any other circumstance explains Catherine’s expression. PEOPLE’s description supports saying she appeared emotional; it does not confirm that she cried or reveal her private thoughts.

PEOPLE placed the appearance in the context of Catherine’s recovery after chemotherapy. It described the Festival as her first major engagement with the royal family since completing chemotherapy, which she announced on 9 September 2024. In that announcement, Catherine said: “Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.” That statement gives context to the period, but it does not establish her condition or feelings at the event.
Was this a full return to royal duties?
No. PEOPLE described the Festival as a significant return to a major royal-family engagement, but the appearance should not be treated as evidence that Catherine had resumed her full schedule of duties. At the time, she had said her recovery would continue after chemotherapy.

PEOPLE quoted royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith saying Catherine was “clearly a vital piece of the royal family, a really important both symbolically and in reality as a future Queen.” That is Smith’s assessment, not an official description of Catherine’s role or a statement about her health.
How the Festival differs from the Cenotaph service
The Festival of Remembrance and the Cenotaph service are separate events. The Festival takes place on Saturday evening at the Royal Albert Hall; the Cenotaph service is held on Remembrance Sunday in central London and is described by the Royal Family as the central national ceremony. PEOPLE reported that Catherine attended the Cenotaph service on 10 November 2024, the day after the Festival. Her attendance at the two events should not blur their distinct venues and formats. See the Royal Family’s Remembrance guide for the Sunday service context.
