Whoopi Goldberg publicly mourned her Sister Act co-star Maggie Smith on September 27, 2024, the day Smith died at age 89. In an Instagram post, Goldberg called Smith a great woman and a brilliant actress and said she could not believe she had been lucky enough to work with her.
What Goldberg posted
Goldberg’s tribute appeared on Instagram on the day of Smith’s death. As quoted by the Associated Press, she wrote:
“Maggie Smith was a great woman and a brilliant actress. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to work with the ‘one-of-a-kind.’ My heartfelt condolences go out to the family…RIP.”
The Independent also reported the post and said it was accompanied by a photo of the two actresses in their Sister Act costumes. Goldberg’s message is a short, personal remembrance rather than a statement about Smith’s career or death.

The Sister Act connection
Goldberg and Smith worked together on two films: Sister Act (1992) and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). Both films paired Goldberg’s character with a group of nuns, and Smith’s presence in the cast is a key reason the pair are linked in coverage of her death. Goldberg’s tribute refers to the work they did together rather than to any other project.
Goldberg’s memoir account of Smith
Goldberg has also written about Smith outside the context of the films. In her memoir, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, she recounts a night during the London run of the Sister Act musical in 2010, when she learned her mother had died. As The Independent reported in May 2024, Smith stayed with her for hours afterward. Goldberg describes the moment as “a big wave of kindness from Maggie.”
