Why the look was built around tailoring
The dress is the piece that makes the outfit read as a tuxedo rather than a gown: suit lapels and raglan sleeves sit on a floor-length silhouette, and the white coat over it adds a second layer of structure. Browne framed the design in his own terms when speaking to Vogue: “For me, everything begins and ends with tailoring. I like to play with and reinterpret classic codes of black-tie dressing—and to reintroduce these traditional codes to people in ways they’ve never seen before.”
The coat’s embellishment figures
Vogue reports that the white overcoat was embroidered with 350,000 matte sequins and that the embellishment took 7,700 hours. Both figures describe the coat’s decoration only, not the dress, boots or accessories, and they are Vogue’s reported numbers rather than figures from an independent count.

The top hat
The hat is the part of the look most readers ask about. Vogue describes a black top hat with a netted veil, while AP describes a mini top hat as part of the head-to-toe Browne design. The two descriptions agree on color and on the hat’s role as a finishing accessory, and differ on scale. Treat the hat as a bespoke piece; neither outlet names a retail equivalent.
How the look connected to the Met Gala theme
The gala was held May 5, 2025, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to open Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and the dress code was “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on suiting. British Vogue describes the show as exploring Black style and dandyism. AP says it covers Black menswear from the 18th century onward, with dandyism as a unifying theme. A black-and-white tuxedo-based look is a direct reading of that brief.

Goldberg’s connection to André Leon Talley
Goldberg tied the evening to her late friend, the fashion editor André Leon Talley. Speaking to AP during cocktails, she said: “I think they did him proud,” Goldberg said during cocktails. “I’m very happy to be here again, but spectacularly happy to see how they took care of him.” In Vogue’s behind-the-scenes video she added: “The first time I came, I came with Andre Leon Talley, so I am channeling him.”
Who designed it and how Goldberg chose it
Thom Browne designed the bespoke look. Goldberg told AP that Browne asked her to attend in his design: “He said. ‘Will you come?’ Goldberg said of Browne. ‘And I said, when you’re done, just put it on me, and I’m good. I feel incredible.'”

Can readers buy this look?
The dress, overcoat, boots and jewelry were bespoke or custom, as reported by Vogue and AP. No source establishes whether any piece is available to buy, and this article does not identify a retail product as the same item. A store top hat with a black finish is a fair stylistic match for the accessory, but it is not Goldberg’s custom hat, and any shopping search should begin from the designer’s own collection rather than from this description.

The sequin count and the 7,700-hour figure are Vogue’s, and remain unverified by a second outlet. Vogue’s description of the hat’s netting and AP’s “mini” description differ in emphasis, so the reader should not treat either as a measurement.
