The “forgotten Marvel superhero” in this headline is Molecule Man, the alias of Owen Reece. Marvel describes him as capable of controlling molecules—and, as his understanding of that power grows, warping reality itself. But his abilities do not make him a consistently omnipotent character: his meekness, mental blocks and unstable grasp of sanity shape how he uses them. His importance to the Secret Wars stories makes him more than a power-ranking footnote.
Who is Molecule Man?
Owen Reece first appeared as a Fantastic Four adversary in Fantastic Four #20 (1963), according to the article that matches the original headline. Marvel’s official profile identifies Reece as Molecule Man and traces his abilities to an experimental particle-accelerator incident involving energy from the Beyonders.
His first role as an opponent is only the beginning of the character. Marvel’s profile describes someone whose power and personal struggles sit side by side: Reece can affect matter on an extraordinary scale, yet loneliness, meekness and mental blocks complicate his relationship with that power.
What can Molecule Man do?
His defining ability is control over molecules. Marvel’s profile says that Reece’s developing understanding of his powers enables him to create force shields, fire destructive beams, open portals and ultimately warp reality. He can transform and transmute matter rather than merely rearrange it.

That breadth is why the headline calls him one of comics’ most powerful characters. Marvel itself describes him as “literally one of the most powerful beings in the universe.” That is Marvel’s characterization, not an independently established ranking: there is no single reliable cross-character scale that settles who is strongest across different stories, versions and circumstances.
Why his power has limits in practice
Raw capability and reliable control are not the same thing. Marvel’s profile emphasizes Reece’s meekness, mental blocks and unstable grasp of sanity. Those traits help explain why he should not be read as an always-in-control, all-powerful force. The story’s tension comes partly from the gap between what he may be capable of and what he can manage or choose to do.

- Includes Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther and Iron Spider
- Connect the Titan Hero Power FX Pack (not included) to operate the figures
That character dimension also gives his loneliness narrative weight. Marvel’s profile says that despite delighting in his abilities, he often wallows in loneliness. His power is not simply a set of spectacular effects; it is bound up with his isolation and difficulty navigating life.
How Molecule Man fits into Secret Wars
Reece matters to both the original Secret Wars and the later 2015 event. Marvel’s Secret Wars guide describes a scheme involving Doctor Doom, Owen Reece, the Beyonders and the multiverse. Doom uses the power involved to create Battleworld. Marvel’s character profile says Reece is held there as a power source and later helps Reed Richards restore the multiverse.
