On French television, Serge Gainsbourg told Whitney Houston, “I want to fuck you.” Host Michel Drucker first softened the line into a compliment, then Gainsbourg corrected the translation. The exchange aired on Champs-Élysées on 5 April 1986, according to retrospective accounts. It was an awkward television exchange, not a formal speech.
What happened on Champs-Élysées
Whitney Houston and Serge Gainsbourg appeared on the French television program Champs-Élysées, hosted by Michel Drucker. In the exchange later recalled by Drucker, Gainsbourg addressed Houston in English with the explicit line, “I want to fuck you.” Drucker initially presented the remark to Houston as a compliment; Gainsbourg then made clear that the sexual meaning was intended. EL PAÍS and retrospective coverage by Télé Star report the incident as taking place on 5 April 1986. EL PAÍS; Télé Star
Why the exchange became so awkward
The tension came from the gap between what Gainsbourg said and what Drucker first translated. Houston was initially given a softened version; Gainsbourg’s correction removed that cover in front of her and the television audience. The line is widely reported in retrospective accounts, rather than presented here as a fresh transcription from an independently verified original broadcast. Le Parisien interview with Michel Drucker
What Michel Drucker later recalled
In a later interview, Drucker recalled being embarrassed by the moment. The transcript records him saying, “Et moi, j’étais très gêné” (“And I was very embarrassed”). That is Drucker’s retrospective description of his own reaction; the available accounts do not establish a direct later statement from Houston about how she privately felt. It was a TV exchange, not a formal speech
The episode is sometimes framed as a “speech,” but the accounts describe a brief exchange during a television appearance. Calling it one of the most awkward or infamous moments in Houston’s career is a judgment, not a measurable ranking. Nor do the cited accounts establish that this incident harmed her career.
Do not confuse it with Houston’s 1994 Grammy moment
Houston had another awkward television moment at the 1994 Grammy Awards, involving Dolly Parton and producer David Foster during a handoff. That was a separate incident, not the Gainsbourg exchange on French television. The Washington Post
