The DIY supercar most closely tied to this story is the Manta Mirage, also called the Manta Virage in some accounts. An enthusiast vehicle database identifies a 1974 Manta Mirage in the original Gone in 60 Seconds, but the naming and film-car details are not settled by a manufacturer or production record. The distinction matters: a car’s appearance in a film does not by itself prove its exact build, drivetrain, or provenance.
Which DIY supercar became a movie icon?
The likely answer is the Manta Mirage, a fiberglass kit car that some coverage calls the Manta Virage. Supercar Blondie’s June 7, 2025 article describes a kit attributed to Brad and Tim LoVette, which could be completed at home or by an authorized assembler. Those are claims from that article; no manufacturer source was available here to confirm the attribution or settle the model name. Supercar Blondie’s account uses “Virage,” while an enthusiast vehicle database calls the car in the 1974 film a “Manta Mirage.”
Was a Manta kit car in the original Gone in 60 Seconds?
The original Gone in 60 Seconds was released in 1974; the franchise’s official website lists it alongside the 1989 and 2000 films. A community-maintained entry at the Internet Movie Cars Database identifies a 1974 Manta Mirage in the original film. That is useful secondary identification, not a primary production record, so it supports a qualified identification rather than a definitive account of the car’s construction or history.
The franchise site’s promotional line, “Build & Drive Your Own!”, refers to its vehicle offering. It does not establish that Manta kits are currently available. The official Gone in 60 Seconds website confirms the franchise context; the specific Manta identification comes from the IMCDB vehicle entry.

What about Death Race 2000?
Supercar Blondie also links a Virage to the 1975 film Death Race 2000, but descriptions of the film’s cars conflict. Without a stronger production record or vehicle-provenance source, it is not possible to establish that a production Manta Virage appeared in the film or to name its builder. The Gone in 60 Seconds identification has a specific secondary database entry; the Death Race 2000 claim remains unresolved.
What are the reported specifications—and how certain are they?
Supercar Blondie reports a weight of 1,900 pounds, Chevrolet V8 options of 4.6 or 5.7 liters, estimated zero-to-60-mph acceleration in under five seconds, a top speed of about 150 mph, and a starting price below $6,000. These are secondary figures that were not verified against a period manufacturer catalog or technical source. They should be read as claims in that article—not as standardized specifications for every build, independently tested results, or a current price.

Current availability of Manta kits or compatible parts has not been established. The historical claims about home assembly and an authorized assembler do not show that either route remains open today. Check for current manufacturer or seller documentation before treating the car as obtainable; the franchise website’s “Build & Drive Your Own!” wording is not evidence of Manta kit sales.
