Spectre, the eerie-looking Alabama “ghost town,” is not a real abandoned settlement. It is the remains of an outdoor set built for Tim Burton’s 2003 film Big Fish. The set stands on Jackson Lake Island in Millbrook, just north of Montgomery.
Where is the Alabama ghost town from Big Fish?
Spectre was built on Jackson Lake Island in Millbrook, Alabama, north of Montgomery. The Alabama Tourism Department places Millbrook in Autauga and Elmore counties and identifies the island’s connection to the 2003 film Big Fish. It also lists kayaking and fishing among the island’s recreational activities.
Why does Spectre look abandoned?
The buildings were made for the camera, not as complete, usable structures. The Exploring Alabama archive says they were finished only on the fronts and sides visible in the film’s shots. Once filming was over, the set remained exposed to fire, flooding, and years of deterioration.
That construction explains the town’s uncanny appearance: what looks like a street of abandoned buildings is partly a collection of facades designed to suggest a town from particular angles. The archive’s account is dated and the site says it is not actively maintained, so its description should not be treated as a current inspection.

What remains of the Spectre set?
An Exploring Alabama description dated July 20, 2017, listed a church, the mayor’s home, and five other clapboard houses among the remnants. Those details establish what was documented then, not an exact present-day inventory. A January 2020 on-site report also described buildings lost in a fire and noted artificial trees made from foam and fiberglass.
The film gives the fictional town a more idealized life than the weathered set now suggests. In dialogue reproduced by the archive, Norther Winslow, played by Steve Buscemi, praises Spectre’s idyllic conditions: “Everything tastes better here. Even the water is sweet. It never gets too hot, too cold, too humid, and at night the wind goes through the trees, well, you’d swear there was a whole symphony out there playing just for you.” That is the character’s line in the film, not a statement by Buscemi about the real island.

Is Spectre a real Alabama town?
No. Spectre is a fictional place created for Big Fish, and its remains are a movie set—not evidence of a town that gradually emptied out. It is easy to confuse the story with Alabama’s genuine ghost-town history, but Old Cahawba, also called Cahaba, is a different place. The Alabama Historical Commission identifies Cahawba as Alabama’s first capital, beginning in 1819; the capital moved in 1826, and the town later declined. Today, Old Cahawba is an archaeological and historic site operated by the Alabama Historical Commission.
| What to compare | Spectre | Old Cahawba |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Fictional town and outdoor set created for Big Fish in 2003. | Real settlement and Alabama’s first capital in 1819, according to the Alabama Historical Commission. |
| Why it was left behind | Filming ended; the set was left to deteriorate and has suffered fire and flooding. | The capital moved in 1826, and the town later declined. |
| What visitors encounter | Remaining movie-set structures and facades; the current inventory is not established by the dated descriptions available. | An archaeological site and historic landscape. |
| Access information | Check the island operator’s current information before traveling; current entry rules are not established here. | Operated by the Alabama Historical Commission. |
Can you visit the Big Fish movie set?
Jackson Lake Island is associated with the film and the state tourism page describes kayaking and fishing there. However, the sources available do not establish current visiting hours, admission fees, gate procedures, or camping availability. The Exploring Alabama archive dates its visitor information to July 20, 2017, and the on-site report’s observations date to January 2020; neither is reliable guidance for a trip today.
