The major Peter Lindbergh exhibitions documented by museums and foundations have all ended; the sources available for this guide do not establish a Lindbergh exhibition currently open as of October 2026. For a film, start with Peter Lindbergh: Women’s Stories (2019), directed by Jean-Michel Vecchiet: its distributor lists iTunes streaming, and Apple TV has a listing in its Germany storefront. Availability varies by country. To revisit the photographs at home, look for the Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories exhibition catalogue.

Where to see Peter Lindbergh’s photography

The museum pages below document notable past exhibitions, not current ticket options. Their dates and descriptions are useful for understanding where Lindbergh’s work has been shown and what each exhibition offered. Check the Peter Lindbergh Foundation and official museum schedules for future presentations, and confirm dates and ticket status with a venue before travelling.

That distinction matters when planning a visit: an exhibition page may remain online as an archive after a show closes. The dates below identify when the exhibitions ran; they should not be read as upcoming dates. As of October 2026, no official venue page established a Lindbergh exhibition that was currently open. There is therefore no currently open venue to compare for tickets, location, or visiting hours in the information available here.

Untold Stories in Düsseldorf and Hamburg (2020)

Untold Stories was the first survey exhibition curated by Lindbergh himself, according to the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MK&G). Lindbergh spent two years assembling an uncompromising selection of 140 photographs spanning his work from the early 1980s. The Foundation Peter Lindbergh cooperated in organizing the exhibition.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

MK&G presented the show from June 20 to November 1, 2020. Its page also records that the Düsseldorf presentation at Kunstpalast was extended until September 27, 2020, and that the Foundation reproduced the exhibition so Düsseldorf and Hamburg could present it at the same time. Both runs have ended.

The show’s self-curated approach is one reason it is a useful reference point in Lindbergh’s exhibition history: rather than being described simply as a selection assembled by a venue, it was his own survey of work from across his career. MK&G says he spent two years shaping the selection. The museum also preserves a first-person account of encountering the exhibition mock-up. In a catalogue interview in June 2019, Lindbergh said: “The first time I saw my photographs on the walls of the exhibition mock-up, I was startled, but in a positive way. It was overwhelming to be thus confronted with who I am.”

Untold Stories in A Coruña (2021–22)

The MOP Foundation lists the exhibition at its A Coruña venue from December 4, 2021, to March 1, 2022. It notes that Lindbergh curated the exhibition before his death. These dates are historical, not a current invitation to visit.

This later presentation gives readers another documented location for Untold Stories, but it does not mean the exhibition is still touring or that the same installation can be booked elsewhere. If a future venue announces a Lindbergh exhibition, rely on that venue’s own schedule for dates and ticket information rather than assuming an earlier show will return in the same form.

The Lightness of Being in Tallinn (2024)

Fotografiska Tallinn presented this exhibition from February 3 to June 2, 2024. The Foundation curated it with Fotografiska Stockholm’s exhibition director. The museum describes a career-spanning selection that included black-and-white photographs, portraits, and work exploring the body, dance, and movement.

Fotografiska’s description gives a sense of the themes visitors could encounter, but the listed run has passed. The exhibition page also records Lindbergh’s views on retouching. It attributes to him: “Heartless retouching should not be chosen to represent women. When you subscribe to the idea that there cannot be beauty without truth, the answer is clear. How crazy and unreal is the idea of erasing all your experience from your face.” The statement helps explain the emphasis on natural appearance and experience in discussions of his portraits; it is not a promise that every future exhibition will use the same selection or framing.

From Fashion to Reality in Munich (2017)

Kunsthalle München dates this exhibition from April 13 to August 31, 2017. It presented approximately 220 objects, including films, storyboards, props, Polaroids, and contact sheets. The show has ended; the venue page states that the Kunsthalle is closed for reinstallation until October 22, 2026.

The approximately 220-object figure describes a broader display than a count of finished photographs alone: the exhibition included films and working materials such as storyboards, props, Polaroids, and contact sheets. Kunsthalle München’s page also attributes a shorter statement to Lindbergh: “HOW CRAZY AND UNREAL IS THE IDEA OF ERASING ALL YOUR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR FACE?” Its capitalization and plural “experiences” differ from the wording quoted by Fotografiska Tallinn, so the two quotations should not be combined or treated as one exact version.

These exhibitions offered different ways into Lindbergh’s work: a self-curated survey, a career-spanning selection, and a presentation that included materials beyond finished photographs. Their published histories do not establish a new exhibition schedule. The stated counts also refer to different things: 140 photographs in the Hamburg exhibition, approximately 220 objects in Munich, and 150 photographs in the Untold Stories book. They are not interchangeable measures of the same display.

Which film about Lindbergh should you look for?

Peter Lindbergh: Women’s Stories (2019)

The clearest film-viewing lead is Peter Lindbergh: Women’s Stories, a 2019 documentary directed by Jean-Michel Vecchiet. Distributor DCM gives its German theatrical release date as May 30, 2019, and lists streaming on iTunes. Apple TV’s Germany storefront lists the documentary with a runtime of 1 hour 53 minutes.

Those listings are not proof of current access everywhere. Storefront catalogs and rights can vary by territory and change over time; the Germany listing does not establish availability in another country or whether access is a rental, purchase, or subscription. Check your local storefront for the title and its current viewing terms before planning to watch. DCM’s phrase “STREAMING ON iTunes” is a useful lead, but by itself it does not tell viewers what a local storefront currently offers or what the price is.

When checking, search the full title and confirm that the listing is the 2019 documentary directed by Vecchiet. Then check the country or region attached to the storefront, whether the option is rent or buy, whether a subscription is required, and what language or subtitle choices are listed. These details can differ between territories and listings. No current price, universal viewing link, or confirmed subscription tier is given here, so those should be checked directly rather than assumed.

Other films directed by Lindbergh

A Metropolitan Museum of Art archive record identifies several films directed by Lindbergh:

  • Models, The Film (1991)
  • Inner Voices (1999), which the record says won the Best Documentary Prize at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival
  • Pina Bausch, der Fensterputzer (2001)
  • Everywhere at Once (2007), narrated by Jeanne Moreau and presented at Cannes and Tribeca, according to the record

The archive record documents filmography and festival history; it does not confirm that any of these titles has a current legal home-viewing option. For a particular film, search film archives, libraries, and local cinematheques, then verify that an actual screening or authorized viewing option is available.

For older titles, a record of a festival prize or presentation is useful context, not a screening notice. Check the institution’s current calendar or catalog for the exact film and date, and verify whether it is a public screening or whether a library viewing requires a particular membership or appointment. No such requirements are established for any specific institution, so ask the archive or venue directly. If no current listing appears, that does not prove the film is unavailable everywhere; it means the available records here do not establish a way to watch it now.

Revisit the photographs in the Untold Stories catalogue

If a concluded exhibition is not accessible, the catalogue offers a documented physical way to spend time with the work. MK&G describes Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories as a 320-page hardcover published by Taschen, with 150 photographs, an interview between Kunstpalast director Felix Krämer and Lindbergh, and a text by Wim Wenders. The museum lists German, English, and French editions.

The Rijksmuseum library record dates the Taschen publication to 2020 and lists ISBNs 9783836579919 and 9783836583794. Use the full title or an ISBN when searching library catalogs or booksellers, and check the edition and seller details: the bibliographic record does not establish current retail stock or price.

The catalogue is a practical option for readers who want a physical reference after an exhibition closes, but it is not a substitute for an in-person installation. The documented book details can help narrow a search: look for the 320-page Taschen hardcover, check whether the listing is in German, English, or French, and compare the ISBN against the edition offered. A bookseller’s current listing should also be checked for condition, seller, shipping, and price. The book’s publication details are documented here, not a particular retailer’s inventory or commercial terms.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The exhibition and book counts describe different things. MK&G says the Hamburg exhibition included 140 photographs; its catalogue description gives 150 photographs across the 320-page book. Kunsthalle München’s approximately 220-object count refers to the 2017 exhibition, which included non-photographic material as well.

How to check for a future exhibition or film screening

  1. Check the official venue first. Look at the Peter Lindbergh Foundation and the official schedules of photography museums and galleries for announced dates. The past exhibitions listed above are not currently open.
  2. Confirm the exact dates and access. Use the venue’s own event page to check that a show is running during your visit and to verify ticket requirements before making plans. If a page describes a past show, treat it as historical information, not a ticket offer.
  3. Search for the documentary locally. Look up Peter Lindbergh: Women’s Stories in your country’s legal streaming or digital-film storefront and confirm the available format and terms.
  4. Compare the viewing terms, not just the title. Check country availability, rental versus purchase, language and subtitles, and whether access is standalone or subscription-based. The available Germany listing is an example of a storefront lead, not a guarantee for other regions.
  5. For older films, verify the specific title. Check a film archive, library, or cinematheque listing for a scheduled screening or authorized home-viewing option; a filmography entry alone does not demonstrate access.
  6. For the catalogue, verify the edition. Search by the full title or ISBN and confirm language, seller, stock, and price directly. Bibliographic records establish identifying details, not current availability.

There are no meaningful current museum choices to rank in the sources checked, because the exhibition runs listed here have ended. For historical comparison, use the venue and date, the curatorial approach, and the materials shown. For a film, compare region and viewing terms. Those are more useful checks than assuming two listings offer equivalent access.

Why Lindbergh’s work continues to draw viewers

The exhibitions’ emphasis on unretouched appearance and experience helps explain the enduring interest in Lindbergh’s portraits. Fotografiska Tallinn attributes this statement to him: “Heartless retouching should not be chosen to represent women. When you subscribe to the idea that there cannot be beauty without truth, the answer is clear. How crazy and unreal is the idea of erasing all your experience from your face.” The same page’s wording is distinct from Kunsthalle München’s shorter quotation, which reads: “HOW CRAZY AND UNREAL IS THE IDEA OF ERASING ALL YOUR EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR FACE?”

These quotations offer context for how institutions have framed his work, but they should be attributed carefully: the Tallinn and Munich pages use different wording. The longer version speaks of erasing “all your experience,” while the Munich quotation uses “all your experiences” and is presented in capitals. Keeping the source-specific wording intact avoids turning two related statements into a composite quotation.

MK&G also quotes Lindbergh recalling his reaction to the exhibition mock-up: “The first time I saw my photographs on the walls of the exhibition mock-up, I was startled, but in a positive way. It was overwhelming to be thus confronted with who I am.” The museum says he made the remark in a catalogue interview in June 2019.
