On September 2, 2025, TODAY colleagues announced that Sheinelle Jones was scheduled to return to the NBC morning program on Friday, September 5, in a prerecorded interview with Savannah Guthrie. The announcement came after Jones’s extended absence and the May 2025 death of her husband, Uche Ojeh. It described a planned interview—not a live on-air return. The announcement establishes what was scheduled in 2025, not Jones’s role on TODAY as of October 2026.
What did TODAY announce about Sheinelle Jones’s return?
Guthrie introduced the planned conversation on September 2. She said it would address how Jones had carried on in the months since her loss, her thoughts on grief, and a message of hope for people facing struggles. Guthrie described the family’s experience as having “been through so much after the devastating loss of her husband, Uche,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
Guthrie also said, “We shared a really personal conversation, talking about how she has carried on and found the strength these past few months,” the Times reported. The article attributed the phrase “beautiful nightmare” to Jones as a description of her experience, relayed by Guthrie; it should not be treated as a direct transcript from Jones.
When was the interview scheduled to air?
The scheduled date was Friday, September 5, 2025. The announcement described a prerecorded interview with co-host Savannah Guthrie, rather than a live return to the broadcast. The Los Angeles Times and TVLine both reported the September 5 schedule on September 2 (Los Angeles Times; TVLine). Those reports establish the announced schedule; they are not independent confirmation here that the interview aired as planned.

Why had Jones been away from TODAY?
Jones had been absent from the program since December 2024. The initial public explanation for her time away was a “family health matter,” according to the Los Angeles Times and TheWrap (Los Angeles Times; TheWrap).
Her husband, Uche Ojeh, died in May 2025 at age 45 following glioblastoma. TODAY colleagues announced his death on May 23, the Los Angeles Times reported. Before that announcement, the reports described Jones’s public explanation as a family health matter, not a public disclosure of a diagnosis.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The September 2, 2025 coverage documented a scheduled September 5 interview after Jones’s extended absence and her husband’s death. It does not establish her current role on TODAY as of October 2026. The return announcement was a specific, dated schedule update, not a reliable basis for making a claim about her status now.
