In a August 2014 article, Stanford postdoctoral biologist Sebastian Alvarado offered genetic and epigenetic ideas for how such characters might acquire enhanced traits. A 2017 physiology teaching paper uses Captain America to explain real concepts such as strength, endurance, power and aerobic metabolism. Neither source shows that these transformations or feats can happen in a real person.
What Stanford’s biologist proposed
Stanford’s article was written by Bjorn Carey and published on August 13, 2014. It identifies Sebastian Alvarado as a Stanford postdoctoral research fellow in biology. The article says that the comics and movies gloss over scientific principles, and it presents Alvarado’s ideas as possibilities for thinking about how the characters could have been made. The Stanford piece is the original source for the ideas below; it does not report experiments that test them.
Epigenetics and gene editing as explanatory lenses
Alvarado’s main framework is epigenetics, the set of chemical changes that switch genes on or off without altering the DNA sequence, along with gene editing as a way to imagine deliberate changes to a person’s biology. Both are used as lenses for a story-level question: how a body could be altered in the first place. Stanford’s article frames them as ways of thinking, not as a demonstrated route to a superhuman body.
“Hulk-oglobin” and oxygen-carrying blood
For the Hulk, Alvarado speculates about blood chemistry. In the article’s words, his quote reads: “If you want to get really creative, maybe his blood is full of some sort of green Hulk-oglobin, which can carry more oxygen to the muscles than hemoglobin and gives him his strength and stamina.” The word “Hulk-oglobin” is an invented name playing on hemoglobin, the real oxygen-carrying protein in human red blood cells. The sentence is imaginative speculation about a fictional character, not a finding about human blood.

Genes linked to muscle mass
The article also mentions genes involved in muscle mass and in the oxygen-carrying load of blood. These are real areas of human biology, and they explain why people differ in muscle size and aerobic capacity. The Stanford article does not show that altering these genes would produce the strength the Hulk displays.
What the physiology paper does with Captain America
The second source is “Superhero physiology: the case for Captain America,” published in 2017 in the American Physiological Society’s journal Advances in Physiology Education. It is a peer-reviewed teaching article, and its author is identified as Zehr. Its purpose is educational. It uses scenes from the films and the character’s portrayed abilities as a case study for explaining how real human muscles and energy systems work.

Strength, power and muscle endurance
The paper uses Captain America to discuss strength, power and muscle endurance, which are measurable and trainable in real people. Its physiological hypotheses describe how the character might perform, while acknowledging that the performance shown on screen exceeds ordinary human capability. The fiction is a prompt for explaining actual muscle function.
Aerobic metabolism and model-dependent numbers
The paper also discusses aerobic metabolism and estimates of the energy the character would need and store. These figures are calculations built on assumptions about the character and the scenes, not measurements of a real person. Zehr’s framing sums up the approach: “Superheroes can make great foils for exploring the limits of human biology and the impact of technology on training and performance.”

Comparing the explanations
The table below sorts each idea by the biology it invokes and separates it from what the sources show about real people.
| Explanation | Biology it invokes | Source and date | Status for real people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epigenetic or gene-editing transformation | Gene regulation and deliberate genetic change | Stanford, August 13, 2014 (Alvarado) | Speculative. No experiment in the source shows such a change producing superhuman traits. |
| “Hulk-oglobin” carrying extra oxygen | Blood oxygen transport | Stanford, August 13, 2014 (Alvarado) | Imaginative. Human hemoglobin is real; the claimed enhanced version is not. |
| Genes linked to muscle mass | Muscle growth and size | Stanford, August 13, 2014 | Real biology that varies between people. The source does not link it to superhuman strength. |
| Captain America’s strength, power and endurance | Muscle function | APS journal, 2017 (Zehr) | Strength, power and endurance are measurable in people. The depicted feats exceed ordinary capability. |
| Captain America’s energy and aerobic demands | Aerobic metabolism and energy stores | APS journal, 2017 (Zehr) | Model-dependent estimates. Not measurements of any real person. |

- The Stanford article is from 2014 and reports one researcher’s speculative discussion. It is not a review of gene editing or human performance.
- The 2017 physiology paper is a teaching article focused on Captain America. It is not a study of the Hulk, and it does not review human-performance or gene-editing technology.
- Neither source describes a method that combines muscle function, oxygen transport and genetic change to produce superhuman feats.
- Neither source reviews developments published after its own date, so claims about current gene-editing capability would need newer primary research.
How to read superhero biology claims
- Check whether the claim is labeled as speculation, a teaching example or a measured result.
- Separate the real biology named in a claim (muscle genes, hemoglobin, aerobic metabolism) from the fictional extension of it.
- Treat numbers for a fictional character as calculations under stated assumptions, not as data about people.
The most accurate answer is that Stanford’s biologist offered imaginative genetic and epigenetic possibilities, and the physiology paper uses Captain America to teach how strength, endurance and energy supply work in real bodies. The fictional powers themselves rest on no demonstrated mechanism in either source.
