JD Fortune, the Canadian singer who won CBS’s Rock Star: INXS in 2005, became the band’s new lead singer, recorded the album Switch with INXS and toured with the group. He has since described that period as personally difficult. He has also returned to performing INXS songs in Australia, and the most recent reporting, an interview published June 11, 2026, describes a Best of INXS 2026 Tour with performances in October.
How he won and joined INXS
INXS had been without its original frontman, Michael Hutchence, since his death in 1997. Rock Star: INXS was CBS’s search for a replacement, and Fortune won the competition in 2005. CBS News covered the result and the band’s reasons for choosing him. Guitarist Tim Farriss explained the decision in terms of Fortune’s songwriting during the competition: “Well, he’s just, I guess, he wrote the song ‘Pretty Vegas’ during the course of the show,” said Farriss. CBS News published the statement on November 28, 2005.
Switch and the touring years
Fortune recorded Switch with INXS, and contemporary CBS coverage described it as the band’s new CD. He then toured internationally with the group and fronted it for several years. This is the period most readers remember him from, and it was a demanding one.
What he has said about the period
In a long-form retrospective interview published by Rolling Stone Australia in 2022, Fortune spoke in the first person about the pressure of joining an established band, the intensity of touring and personal difficulties during those years. These are his own account. The interview does not independently verify the details he gave, and this article does not treat them as established findings about his health, finances or legal matters.
