Each of the six central characters in Friends has a recognizable occupation. Rachel Green starts out as a waitress at Central Perk while aiming for a career in fashion. Monica Geller is the group’s chef. Phoebe Buffay is a masseuse who also plays music. Ross Geller is a paleontologist. Joey Tribbiani is an actor, often out of work early on. Chandler Bing has a numbers-based corporate job that his friends cannot quite explain. Some of these careers change over the show’s run, and others stay fixed, so the table and sections below separate the two.
Who holds which job, and how clearly the show names it
The jobs are not equally well defined. Some characters have a plainly named occupation, while Chandler’s is intentionally vague. The table compares each character’s starting or best-known role, any career movement, and how precisely the Television Academy’s entry or TIME’s coverage names the work.
| Character | Starting or best-known role | Career aspiration or movement | How clearly the sources name the job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rachel Green | Waitress at Central Perk | Aspires to fashion work; the clearest move from service work toward a chosen field | Explicit (TIME) |
| Monica Geller | Chef, described as a great cook | No career change described in these sources | Clear (Television Academy) |
| Phoebe Buffay | Professional masseuse; music is her side pursuit | Music runs alongside massage work rather than replacing it | Clear for massage; TIME treats the music as amateur, so “musician” is the safer label than “singer-songwriter” |
| Ross Geller | Paleontologist | No comparable shift described in these sources | Clear (Television Academy and TIME) |
| Joey Tribbiani | Actor, often unemployed early on | Breakthrough through a soap-opera role (TIME) | Clear (Television Academy and TIME) |
| Chandler Bing | Corporate job involving numbers that even his friends do not understand | Later career pivot; the new role is not specified in these sources | Deliberately vague; no one-word official title for the early job is given |
The three clearest career arcs
Three characters have career movement that viewers can actually follow on screen. The other three are better understood as fixed identities.
Rachel Green: from waitress to fashion ambitions
Rachel arrives in the first episode after leaving her fiancé at the altar and tries to build an independent life. She takes a job as a waitress at Central Perk, but her ambition is fashion. Her story is the show’s most direct example of entry-level service work serving as a stepping stone toward a chosen field, and it is the arc most often cited when people ask what a character “does” in the series.

Joey Tribbiani: the acting breakthrough
Joey is an aspiring actor for much of the early run, and TIME notes that he gets a big break on a soap opera. That break is the main career turning point the sources identify for him. Viewers should treat it as the show’s acting milestone rather than a complete account of every audition or role he takes.
Chandler Bing: a job the group can’t describe
Chandler’s original job involves numbers, and the joke is that his friends never quite understand what he does. TIME presents this obscurity as a running gag rather than a detail to be decoded. The show later gives him a career pivot, but the sources do not describe the new role precisely enough to name it here, and the early job does not have a single official title that they supply.

Three characters whose jobs stay fixed
Monica, Ross, and Phoebe each have a stable professional identity in the sources. Their occupations are the easiest to answer in one word.
Monica Geller: the chef
The Television Academy describes Monica as a chef and a great cook. “Chef” is the accurate label for her profession in the show.

Ross Geller: the paleontologist
Both the Television Academy and TIME identify Ross as a paleontologist, making him the character whose occupation is most consistently named across sources. “Paleontologist” is the precise term to use.
Phoebe Buffay: massage work and music
Phoebe’s profession is massage. The Television Academy describes her as a masseuse and musician, and TIME separates the professional massage work from the music, which it treats as amateur. Phoebe is therefore best described as a professional masseuse who also plays music, not as a working singer-songwriter.

What the sources do and do not establish
The sources support the broad occupational identities and the main career arcs for Rachel, Joey, and Chandler. They do not provide an episode-by-episode job history, employers for each character across seasons, or official titles for every role. Readers who want those details will need season-level episode guides or official franchise material.
Series scope
