The surprise announced on October 9, 2024, was not a merger or a free perk for Prime members: Apple TV+ became a paid add-on through Prime Video Channels in the United States. The arrangement lets viewers subscribe and watch Apple programming inside Prime Video, but the services keep separate catalogs, accounts and billing routes.
What did Amazon and Apple announce?
Amazon said Apple TV+ would become an optional Prime Video Channels subscription, initially in the United States, with other territories to follow. The launch price announced in October 2024 was $9.99 per month. Amazon described availability as coming later that month, without specifying an exact start date. Amazon’s announcement framed the move as a way to make Apple programming available through Prime Video.
In practical terms, Amazon became another storefront and billing intermediary for Apple’s streaming service. A subscriber could add it through Prime Video and watch Apple content there rather than signing up and watching exclusively through Apple’s own app. The word “partnership” can make the agreement sound broader than it was: the announcement concerned distribution, not shared ownership or a combined streaming library.
What Prime members get—and do not get
Prime membership alone does not unlock Apple TV. Customers must buy the Apple TV add-on separately. Finding an Apple title or tile in Prime Video also does not mean it is included: access may require the Apple subscription, a rental or purchase, or another entitlement shown for that title.

The two services did not merge their catalogs. Amazon titles such as Reacher and The Boys did not thereby become part of Apple TV, and Apple series such as Ted Lasso, Severance and Slow Horses did not become free parts of the standard Prime Video catalog. The add-on provides access to Apple programming through Prime Video; it does not turn Prime into an all-inclusive subscription.
What Apple programming was highlighted?
At launch, Amazon named Apple series and films including The Morning Show, Slow Horses, Presumed Innocent, Severance, Silo, Hijack, Shrinking, Loot and Palm Royale. Amazon also pointed to Apple films and sports programming, including MLS and MLB events associated with Apple’s service. The announcement does not establish that every feature, title right or playback capability is identical across the Prime Video and Apple TV apps.

Why the announcement drew attention
Apple and Amazon compete in streaming, and each has typically presented its own service as part of a distinct ecosystem. Apple has its devices and Apple TV app; Amazon has Prime Video and its Channels marketplace. An Apple subscription appearing inside an Amazon-owned viewing and billing environment was therefore notable, even though it did not combine the companies’ businesses or libraries.
Apple’s stated rationale was broader reach: making its library available to more viewers. That is a plausible distribution strategy, particularly for people who already use Prime Video or do not center their viewing around Apple devices. It is not evidence that Apple TV was failing or that Apple faced a particular subscriber problem; the public announcement established the distribution arrangement, not Apple’s internal subscriber economics.

Amazon gains another recognizable subscription for its marketplace and another reason for customers to browse and watch within Prime Video. By July 2026, Amazon described Prime Video as offering more than 100 add-on subscriptions and highlighted bundles as part of the service’s broader aggregation strategy. Amazon’s July 2026 announcement illustrates the platform’s role as a place to combine services, rather than simply a catalog of Amazon-owned shows.
Is subscribing through Prime Video better than subscribing directly?
Neither route is automatically better. The useful distinction is who bills you, which app you prefer, and whether a current offer applies to your account. A Prime Video subscription can simplify viewing and billing for an Amazon-centered household; a direct Apple subscription can suit someone who relies on Apple’s app, account management or ecosystem. The available information does not establish feature parity across all devices and subscription routes.

Before changing routes, check the displayed monthly price, promotional duration and renewal price; identify the billing merchant; and confirm supported devices and the content you want. Do not assume an existing Apple subscription transfers automatically to Amazon billing. If you enroll through Prime Video while retaining a direct Apple subscription, you may pay twice for access to the same service.

No. The October 2024 arrangement was an add-on distribution option, announced at $9.99 per month—not a discounted Prime-plus-Apple package. That figure is a dated launch price, not a verified current price for every U.S. account.

Later offers are separate developments. Apple and NBCUniversal announced an Apple TV and Peacock bundle in October 2025. In April 2026, Amazon announced that an Apple TV and Peacock Premium Plus bundle would be available through Prime Video for $19.99 per month, describing it as more than 30% below the services’ combined individual prices and as a limited-time offer. Amazon’s bundle announcement does not establish that the offer remains available to every customer now. Likewise, a Prime-member promotion reported in June 2026 offered Apple TV for $5.99 a month for up to two months to customers who signed up by June 26, 2026; that deadline has passed. The promotion report is useful as an example of temporary pricing, not as a current offer.
Later materials also use “Apple TV” rather than the earlier “Apple TV+” branding. Here, Apple TV refers to the streaming service, not the Apple TV app or the Apple TV 4K device.
Does Prime Video now replace cable?
Prime Video is increasingly a storefront and aggregation layer: it can bring together Amazon originals, partner subscriptions, rentals and purchases, live sports, free ad-supported channels, and other live programming. Amazon also presents it as a destination for news. Its news announcement reflects that broader role.
Aggregation is not the same as owning every channel or right. A Prime Video account does not automatically provide every local station, linear network, sports event or live-TV package that a cable subscription might offer. Those can require separate subscriptions, and availability depends on location and rights.

Choose a route that matches how you watch
- Prime Video-centered household: An Amazon-billed add-on may be convenient if you want one app and one billing relationship.
- Apple-centered household: Direct subscription may suit you if you prefer Apple’s app or want Apple to handle account support and billing.
- Already subscribed directly: Check Apple subscriptions and Amazon Channels before enrolling. Keep one route unless you deliberately want two separate subscriptions.
- Considering a bundle: Compare the full renewal price and terms with what you would pay separately. A bundle helps only if you want both services and do not already receive one through another benefit.
Billing, availability and cancellation checks
- Confirm the price before subscribing. The $9.99 monthly figure was Amazon’s U.S. launch price in 2024; later promotional prices had defined eligibility and end dates. Check the live offer and its post-promotion renewal price.
- Check the merchant. The company named on your receipt is the practical starting point for billing questions, refunds and cancellation.
- Check existing subscriptions first. Review both Apple and Amazon account subscriptions to avoid duplicate billing. Do not assume an account can be moved between merchants without canceling and re-enrolling.
- Verify device and playback support. The announcements do not prove identical 4K, HDR, audio, download, profile, offline-playback or simultaneous-stream features across apps and devices.
- Check regional terms. The original launch was U.S.-first, with other territories described as coming later. Prices, titles, sports rights, taxes and offers can differ by country and account.
- Cancel the subscription, not the app. Removing Prime Video or Apple TV from a device does not itself end billing. Use the account that manages the subscription and cancel before the next billing date if you do not want another charge.
