For a solo desk stream, a USB microphone is the simplest connection; choose a dynamic model for a less controlled room or a condenser for a quiet space where vocal detail matters. If you move while presenting, look at a lavalier or headset. For a mic placed on a camera or boom, consider a shotgun—but it must be aimed carefully and still needs to be close enough to the speaker.

These five options are not all the same kind of “type”: dynamic and condenser describe how a mic works, USB describes its connection, and lavalier and shotgun describe form or use. The categories can overlap. A USB mic, for example, can be dynamic or condenser.

Choose a microphone by room, movement, and setup

Your setup Good starting point What to consider
Solo speaker at a desk, simple wiring USB microphone Choose dynamic or condenser based on room noise, placement, and desired sensitivity; USB alone does not determine sound character.
Untreated or noisy room Close-positioned directional microphone; a dynamic model is often a sensible starting point Keep the mic near your mouth, aim it well, and set gain appropriately. Dynamics are not immune to background noise.
Quiet room, voice-over, or acoustic source Condenser microphone Check its power needs and consider whether the room is quiet enough to benefit from its sensitivity.
Moving presenter or hands-free demonstration Lavalier or headset Confirm that the connector works with your camera, computer, or recording device.
On-camera video or boom placement Shotgun microphone Point it at the speaker and account for distance and wind; directionality does not make a distant voice clear by itself.
Modular setup, multiple sources, or future expansion XLR microphone with an interface or mixer It takes more equipment than USB but lets you select and upgrade components separately.

These are starting points, not guarantees: microphone design, pickup pattern, distance, room acoustics, gain, and compatibility all affect the result. Sennheiser’s live-streaming microphone guide and RØDE’s USB-versus-XLR comparison describe the trade-offs between common setups.

Five microphone types and what each does

1. Dynamic: a practical choice for live speech

Dynamic microphones are commonly used for robust live applications and tend to be less sensitive to room reflections than condensers. That can make a close-positioned dynamic mic a useful option in an untreated room. It will not automatically remove a noisy computer, traffic, or other background sound: keep it close, point it toward your voice, and avoid excessive gain. “Dynamic” describes the transducer design, not the connector; dynamic mics can be USB or XLR.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Condenser: detail in a controlled space

Condenser microphones are sensitive and detailed, which can suit voice-over, vocals, and acoustic sources in a quiet recording space. The same sensitivity can pick up more of the room, so a condenser may be less forgiving in an untreated or noisy space. Some models require phantom power. Check the specific mic’s requirements and make sure its interface or mixer can provide the needed power.

3. USB: the straightforward computer connection

A USB microphone combines the mic with electronics such as preamplification and analog-to-digital conversion, so it can connect directly to a computer for a simple one-mic stream. USB is a connection format, not a transducer design: a USB mic may be dynamic or condenser. A USB mic is often a natural first choice for a solo desk setup, but USB by itself does not guarantee better or worse sound.

4. Lavalier or headset: speech while you move

A lavalier clips to clothing, keeping the mic near the presenter while their hands remain free. A headset combines headphones and a microphone and can keep the mic in a consistent position as you move. Either can suit tutorials, interviews, or presentations. Before buying, check the connector and compatibility with the device that will capture or stream your audio; RØDE’s lavalier comparison chart illustrates how connectors and pickup patterns vary among its models.

5. Shotgun: directional pickup for camera or boom use

A shotgun microphone is a highly directional style often used on a camera or boom when the mic needs to sit outside the frame. Directionality helps focus on sound arriving from the direction it faces, but it is not a substitute for proximity. Aim it accurately at the speaker and keep it as close as the shot allows. Wind protection may also matter outdoors. A shotgun pointed poorly—or placed far away in a noisy space—may capture disappointing speech. beyerdynamic’s explanation of polar patterns notes that more directional pickup calls for more precise aiming and does not make distant voices intelligible by itself.

USB or XLR: choose the connection separately

USB is usually simpler when you want one mic connected straight to a computer. XLR runs through an audio interface or mixer, adding equipment and setup, but makes it easier to replace or expand individual parts of the audio chain. Neither connection automatically sounds better: the microphone, room, placement, gain, and compatibility matter. A USB dynamic microphone is one common category for a solo stream, not a universal winner.

If you use XLR, check that your interface or mixer has a compatible input and enough gain for the microphone. If the mic is a condenser, verify whether it needs phantom power and whether the interface can supply it. For USB, confirm that the computer and streaming software can select the mic as an input.

Pick a pickup pattern and place the mic deliberately

A polar pattern describes the directions from which a microphone is most sensitive. Pattern choice and physical placement work together: even a suitable mic can capture too much room sound if it is far from the speaker or pointed the wrong way.

  • Cardioid: emphasizes sound from the front and attenuates sound from the rear. It is a common starting point for one speaker at a desk.
  • Omnidirectional: captures sound from all directions. It can suit a group or ambient recording, but also takes in more surrounding sound.
  • Bidirectional: captures from the front and rear while attenuating the sides. It can work for two people facing one another, depending on the room and recording setup.
  • Supercardioid and hypercardioid: use narrower pickup areas. They can reduce some off-axis sound but require more precise placement; their rear rejection differs by pattern.

For one voice, start with the mic close and in front of you, with its sensitive side aimed toward your mouth. Move it or adjust its angle if it blocks the shot. If two people are speaking, a bidirectional mic may work when they face one another; separate mics are another option if you have enough recording channels. Room noise and speaker placement should guide the choice.

Use accessories only when they solve a problem

  • Pop filter: can reduce bursts of air from plosive sounds such as “p” and “b.”
  • Shock mount: can reduce vibration transferred through a stand.
  • Stand or boom arm: helps keep a desk mic positioned close to you or outside the camera frame.

These accessories support placement and handling; none is a mandatory upgrade for every stream.

Set up and check your streaming audio

  1. Confirm the signal path. Connect a USB mic directly to the computer, or connect an XLR mic to a compatible interface or mixer and then connect that device to the computer.
  2. Check power and input selection. For a condenser, supply phantom power only if the individual microphone requires it. In your streaming or recording software, select the correct microphone or interface as the audio input.
  3. Position the mic. Place it close to your mouth where practical, aim its sensitive side toward you, and keep it clear of keyboard or desk vibrations. For a shotgun, aim it at the speaker; for a lavalier, clip it securely near the voice.
  4. Listen to a test recording. Check that speech is clear and that the recording is not dominated by room noise, plosives, handling noise, or clipping. Adjust position and input gain before adding accessories or processing.
  5. Test the complete stream path. Make a private or otherwise appropriate test in your streaming setup and listen to the captured stream audio, not only to what you hear locally. This can expose a wrong input selection or a level problem.

Troubleshoot common microphone problems

What you hear or see Likely cause What to try
No microphone audio Wrong input selected, loose connection, incompatible connector, or missing required power Check the operating system and streaming software input selections, reconnect the cable, verify compatibility, and check the mic’s power requirements.
Room or computer noise is prominent Mic too far away, high gain, a sensitive mic in a reflective room, or unsuitable placement Move the mic closer, aim its front toward your voice, reduce gain as needed, and try a directional pattern or a dynamic mic as a starting point.
Speech sounds dull or weak Mic is aimed away from the speaker, placed poorly, or the signal path is not set correctly Reposition and aim the mic, then check the selected input and gain.
Plosive thumps Air from “p” or “b” sounds is hitting the mic Adjust the mic angle or position and consider a pop filter.
Desk bumps or handling noise Vibration is traveling through the stand or surface Change the stand or placement; a shock mount may help reduce stand-borne vibration.
Shotgun audio is weak or unclear The mic is too far away or not aimed accurately Bring it closer where the framing allows, point it at the speaker, and manage wind outdoors.

Or let it run in the cloud

Choosing a microphone solves audio capture; it does not keep a prerecorded video playing as a live YouTube stream after your computer shuts down. For that separate job, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It accepts uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
