Melinda French Gates has said her divorce from Bill Gates was not caused by one event. In a 2022 interview, she described a relationship that no longer felt healthy and said she could not trust what they had. She also objected to his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. In later comments, she framed her decision around honesty, trust, and living her values in her closest relationship. These are her public explanations, not a complete account of every private factor.
French Gates said there was no single cause
In a March 2022 interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, French Gates said the split did not come down to “one moment or one specific thing.” She described reaching a point when the relationship no longer felt healthy and she could not trust what they had.
“There just came a point in time where there was enough there that I realized it just wasn’t healthy, and I couldn’t trust what we had,” she said. CBS News published the interview on March 2, 2022.
What she said about Jeffrey Epstein
French Gates said her concerns involved “many things,” and specifically said she disliked Bill Gates’s meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. In the same 2022 interview cycle, she said she had met Epstein once herself, described that meeting as abhorrent, and said she regretted it. She did not identify the meetings as the sole cause of the divorce.
#1 Best Overall
“As I said, it’s not one thing, it was many things. But I did not like that he’d had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no,” she said. Paramount Press Express’s CBS Mornings release preserves that part of the interview.
Her later explanation emphasized values, honesty, and trust
In April 2025, French Gates described the decision in terms of whether she could live her values within her most intimate relationship. The Independent quoted her saying: “If you can’t live your values out inside your most intimate relationship, it was necessary.” The Independent reported those remarks on April 14, 2025.
Rank #2
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that month, she spoke about the role of honesty in a marriage: “Both partners have to be honest with one another, and if you can’t, you can’t have intimacy and you can’t have trust.” She added, “And so in the end, I had to go.” TheWrap reported the interview on April 15, 2025.
What Bill Gates said in 2026 testimony
In 2026 congressional testimony, Bill Gates offered a separate account. He said that in spring 2013 he told French Gates about two affairs, and that the disclosure distressed her. “Well, certainly the fact that I told Melinda during this time frame about the two affairs, that was very distressing to her,” he said. He also said he imagined the disclosure was relevant to the later divorce. This is Gates’s testimony, not a statement by French Gates about the cause of the marriage’s end. The House Oversight transcript records his remarks.

- French Gates and Bill Gates married in 1994 and announced their separation in May 2021 after 27 years together, according to CBS’s 2022 coverage.
- The divorce was finalized in August 2021, two weeks before French Gates’s 57th birthday, TIME reported. In a 2024 interview, she said the decision was personal and that she thought about her three children and the foundation. Those considerations offer context, but do not establish a cause. TIME published its account on June 18, 2024.
- In 2022, she publicly described cumulative problems, a loss of trust, and her objection to Bill Gates’s meetings with Epstein.
- In 2025, she spoke about the decision through values, honesty, intimacy, and trust.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
French Gates’s account is that a combination of problems eroded the relationship, until it no longer felt healthy or trustworthy to her. Her comments about Epstein, her later values-based explanation, and Gates’s separate testimony about disclosing affairs are relevant pieces of the public record, but they should not be collapsed into one definitive explanation. The available statements do not reveal every private factor or prove that any one issue alone caused the divorce.
