Wicked was split into two movies so the adaptation could preserve the stage musical’s songs, storylines and two-act structure without compressing them into one film. The first movie follows Elphaba’s rise toward becoming the Wicked Witch of the West and ends at the Act I climax, “Defying Gravity”; Wicked: For Good carries the story into Act II and Glinda’s journey.
Why couldn’t Wicked be one movie?
The stage musical runs nearly three hours and packs in multiple character arcs, themes and songs. NBCUniversal’s official explainer says that condensing it into one film was judged impossible without compromising the story or beloved songs. Director Jon M. Chu chose two full-length movies to retain the show’s two-act shape rather than cut material to fit a single feature.
Producer Marc Platt described the musical as complex, with rich themes and music that deserved room to breathe. In his view, two films could give each character and storyline the attention it warranted. Chu likewise said that cutting songs or trimming characters began to feel like “fatal compromises” to the source material; the extra space offered room for more depth in the characters’ journeys, as recounted in Peacock’s guide.
How does the split follow the stage musical?
The movies are two parts of one adaptation, not adaptations of two separate stage shows. The dividing line follows the stage musical’s Act I ending: after Elphaba and Glinda uncover the Wizard’s corruption, Elphaba sings “Defying Gravity.” The song closes the first film and marks the turning point into the second act.

That break also gives the two films different dramatic jobs. The first shows the events that put Elphaba on the path to becoming the figure Oz will call wicked. The second picks up the consequences: Elphaba is feared, while Glinda becomes a public symbol of hope. Platt summarized the parallel arcs as Elphaba becoming the Wicked Witch of the West and her friend Glinda becoming “authentically good.”
What does each film cover?
| Film | Story focus | Place in the stage musical |
|---|---|---|
| Wicked (2024) | Elphaba and Glinda meet at Shiz, form an unlikely friendship and encounter the events that set Elphaba on her path. It ends with “Defying Gravity.” | Primarily Act I, ending at its climax. |

The first film opened November 22, 2024, and Wicked: For Good opened November 21, 2025, according to NBCUniversal’s announcements (first film; second film).

Is Wicked: For Good just the second half of the musical?
It continues the stage story from the Act I break, so “the second half” is a useful shorthand for its place in the structure. But the public explanation for making two films is not that the musical was originally two independent stories: it is one stage musical in two acts, adapted as two films. The films’ division preserves that breakpoint while giving the later consequences and Glinda’s development their own space.
