In the United States, current plans cost $8.99, $19.99 or $26.99 per month, before applicable taxes and any partner-billing differences. What is Netflix?
Netflix is an internet-based, mostly on-demand entertainment service. Instead of receiving scheduled channels through cable or an antenna, you choose a film, series, documentary or other program from the Netflix library and stream it to a connected device.
The service combines Netflix-produced originals with licensed films and shows. It also offers games and selected live programming. Netflix is not a cable subscription, an antenna service or an internet connection: you need both a Netflix membership and an internet-connected, compatible device.
The catalog is not identical everywhere. Available titles vary by country and can change as licensing agreements change. Netflix also offers downloads for some content on supported plans and devices, which can be useful while travelling or without a reliable connection. See Netflix’s official explanation of the service for current details.

How much does Netflix cost in the United States?
Netflix’s current U.S. plan pages list these monthly prices:
| Plan | Price | Ads | Quality | Streams at once | Downloads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Yes | 1080p Full HD | 2 | Included |
| Standard | $19.99/month | No | 1080p Full HD | 2 | Included |
| Premium | $26.99/month | No | Up to 4K and HDR | 4 | Included |
These are the current prices shown on Netflix’s U.S. pages when checked for this guide. They are monthly equivalents, not annual billing plans. Over 12 months, they equal $107.88, $239.88 and $323.88 before tax, respectively. Prices can vary by country and may be affected by taxes, promotions, bundles or third-party billing. Netflix can also change prices.
Older search results may still show lower U.S. prices. Do not rely on those figures without checking Netflix’s current plan page.
Which Netflix plan should you choose?
Standard with ads: the cheapest option
Choose Standard with ads if keeping the monthly bill low matters most and you can tolerate advertising. It includes 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous streams and downloads. Ads may appear before or during selected programs, and you cannot fast-forward or skip an ad while it is playing.
The ad-supported catalog is not necessarily identical to the ad-free catalog. A small number of titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions; Netflix marks unavailable titles with a lock icon. Some older devices also do not support this plan. Netflix says Kids profiles do not show ads, although live events included with Netflix plans contain ads.
Standard: the sensible ad-free choice
Standard costs $19.99 per month and provides 1080p Full HD, two simultaneous streams, downloads and an ad-free experience. It is generally the best fit for one or two viewers who do not need 4K.
Premium: for 4K equipment or four viewers
Premium allows up to four simultaneous streams and offers up to 4K Ultra HD and HDR where the title, device, display, HDMI setup and internet service support them. Netflix also lists spatial audio with this plan.

- Cloud gaming, no console required – Stream Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Outer Worlds 2, Ninja Gaiden 4, and hundreds of games on your Fire TV Stick 4K Select with Xbox Game Pass and Luna via cloud gaming. Xbox Game Pass subscription and compatible controller required. Each sold separately.

- Wi-Fi 6 support - Enjoy smooth 4K streaming, even when other devices are connected to your router.
Premium does not make every title 4K or HDR. It also cannot turn a non-4K television into a 4K display. If only one or two people watch and you have no compatible 4K setup, the additional cost may provide little practical benefit.
Profiles, streams and household sharing
Netflix allows up to five profiles on an account. Profiles keep recommendations, viewing activity, maturity settings, My List, subtitle preferences and other personalisation separate. Five profiles do not mean five people can watch simultaneously.
The simultaneous-stream limit is two on Standard with ads and Standard, and four on Premium. You can sign in on compatible devices, but playback at the same time is restricted by the plan.
Netflix’s current rules generally limit account use to people who live in the account holder’s household. A Netflix Household is associated with the main place where the account is watched, using signals including the internet connection, device information and account activity; it is not based on GPS location.
People outside the household normally need their own account or, where available, an eligible extra-member arrangement. Extra members cannot be added to ad-supported plans. Extra-member availability, the number of slots and the price depend on the country, plan and billing arrangement. An extra member must activate in the same country where the account owner created the account and receives one profile rather than the ability to create additional profiles. Check Netflix’s account-sharing guidance before relying on this option.

Netflix can transfer a profile to a new account or eligible extra-member account, preserving items such as recommendations, viewing history, My List, settings and saved games where supported.
What devices work with Netflix?
Netflix is available on many supported:
- Smart TVs, including models from manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense and Vizio
- Roku players and Roku TVs
- Amazon Fire TV devices
- Apple TV and compatible Chromecast or casting devices
- Android phones and tablets, iPhones, iPads and Amazon Fire tablets
- Mac, Windows and Chromebook computers through supported browsers or the Windows app
- PlayStation and Xbox consoles
- Some cable boxes and pay-TV provider devices
- Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest devices
Compatibility depends on the exact model, operating system and plan. Netflix says some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support the service, and a small number of devices may not support every plan. Check the official supported-device list before buying a streaming player or television.

What internet connection do you need?
You need an internet connection capable of streaming video, plus enough bandwidth for the number of people watching at the same time. HD, 4K and HDR playback also depend on your device, display, home network, internet service and the particular title.
There is no single practical setup that guarantees the same result for every household. For current speed recommendations and device requirements, use Netflix’s Help Center guidance. If video repeatedly drops in quality or buffers, test the connection near the viewing device and reduce other heavy network activity.
Can you watch Netflix offline?
Yes, but downloads are not universal. Netflix offers downloads for selected titles on supported plans and devices, including many Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, and Google Chromebook devices. A download can be title-, device- and plan-dependent, and it is not a permanent copy that can be watched indefinitely.
To use the feature, open a downloadable title in the Netflix app and select its download option. Downloads are particularly useful for flights, travel, unreliable mobile service and reducing mobile-data use.

On an iPhone or iPad
Use a mobile browser to visit the signup page. Netflix does not support signup inside the iPhone or iPad app. After creating the account, install or open Netflix and sign in. Netflix’s current instructions for the described app path specify iOS/iPadOS 18 or later.

Through a cable, mobile or internet provider
Open Netflix on the provider’s eligible box and follow the instructions. Confirm who will handle billing. If you already have Netflix, check whether the existing account can be linked to the package before creating another account. This can help avoid duplicate billing.
How billing and cancellation work
Netflix generally charges monthly on the date your membership began. Direct Netflix members manage payment and membership through the account page, while partner-billed customers may need to use their cable, mobile or internet provider. Partner packages can have different rules for payment methods, plan changes, extra members and cancellation.
To cancel a directly billed membership:
- Open the Manage your membership page.
- Select Cancel.
- Select Finish Cancellation.
- Keep the confirmation email.
Signing out or deleting the Netflix app does not cancel the subscription. If you cancel with time left in the billing period, Netflix generally remains available until that period ends. If there is no Cancel button, check whether a partner is billing the account and cancel through that partner. See Netflix’s cancellation instructions.

“This device isn’t part of the Netflix Household”
Use the on-screen verification option if you are travelling or using a legitimate household device. The account owner may need to update the Netflix Household from the main TV, verify the device or sign out of unfamiliar devices. Netflix provides a household-error guide and instructions for updating the household.
Your TV or player does not support Netflix
Check the exact model in Netflix’s supported-device documentation. Replacing an unsupported smart-TV interface with a compatible Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV or other streaming player may be simpler than replacing the television.
A title is locked on the ad plan
The title may have licensing restrictions for the ad-supported catalog. Choose an ad-free plan if the program is essential, but verify that it is available in your country first.

You see a “too many people are watching” message
The account has reached its simultaneous-stream limit. Stop playback on another device or move to a plan with more simultaneous streams. Adding more profiles does not increase this limit.
You cannot find the cancellation option
The account may be billed through a partner. Check the account page for the billing company and follow that provider’s cancellation process.
You may have signed up twice
This can happen when activating Netflix through a provider package while an existing direct membership is still active. Check both billing relationships and ask the provider whether your existing account can be linked.
Is Netflix worth it?
Netflix is most likely to be worthwhile if it has films, documentaries or series you will watch regularly, and if its plan limits match your household. Choose Standard with ads when price is the priority, Standard when you want two ad-free Full HD streams, and Premium when four simultaneous viewers or compatible 4K/HDR equipment justify the cost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore subscribing, check the titles you actually want, your tolerance for ads, the number of people watching, your device compatibility and whether you already pay for several competing services. Netflix’s catalog changes, so a service that is good value for one household may not be for another.
Netflix alternatives
Netflix is not the only streaming option. Without comparing unverified current prices, the broad differences are:
- Hulu: a stronger fit for current television and network-oriented programming where available.
- Disney+: a natural choice for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and family-focused catalogs.
- Max: known for HBO and Warner Bros. programming.
- Prime Video: often encountered as part of the broader Amazon Prime ecosystem in many markets.
- Peacock and Paramount+: alternatives for viewers focused on NBCUniversal or Paramount catalogs.
Catalogs, prices and availability vary by country, so compare the services’ official pages against the specific shows and films your household wants to watch.
