Cloud streaming runs an application or game on remote computers and sends its audio and video to your device over a network. For interactive services such as cloud gaming, your inputs travel back to the remote system, which processes them and sends an updated picture and sound. A streaming proxy can help connect a client to the right remote server; in one NVIDIA CloudXR design, it handles session signaling while the media travels directly between client and server after negotiation.

What is cloud streaming?

Cloud streaming moves some or all of the work that would otherwise happen on a local device to remote infrastructure. The remote system runs an application, game, or other workload, produces audio and video, and sends that output across the network for a client to decode and display.

In interactive streaming, the client also sends inputs—such as controller actions or other commands—to the remote application. That makes the experience a two-way loop rather than a one-way video delivery. The term can describe different services and architectures, so the exact work done remotely and the route taken by the media depend on the system.

How does cloud gaming work?

A simplified interactive path is: user input travels to the remote system, the application processes it and renders a new frame, the system encodes audio and video, and the client receives, decodes, and displays the result. Each stage contributes to the time between an action and the visible response. Meta’s engineering account describes this end-to-end sequence and the cumulative effect of delays across it (Meta Engineering).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Input: A controller, keyboard, or other client input is sent over the network.
  2. Remote processing: The application or game running on the server responds to that input.
  3. Rendering and encoding: The server renders the result and encodes audio and video for delivery.
  4. Return path: Encoded media travels to the client, where it is decoded and displayed.

Cloud gaming is distinct from video-on-demand because the remote game must respond to player actions. Microsoft’s developer documentation distinguishes Xbox Game Streaming, where the game runs on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, from Xbox Remote Play, where the game runs on the user’s own Xbox console (Microsoft Learn).

How does a streaming proxy work?

A proxy is an intermediary that can provide a public-facing point for connection setup, apply authentication, and route a session to an available backend. Its role does not necessarily include carrying the high-volume audio and video. NVIDIA’s CloudXR deployment documentation describes one reference architecture with three principal components: a client, a proxy, and a GPU-accelerated CloudXR server instance (NVIDIA CloudXR deployment documentation).

  1. Client connection: The client opens a secure WebSocket connection to the proxy to begin signaling.
  2. Authentication and selection: The proxy can check signaling headers, choose an available server instance, and forward the signaling connection.
  3. Session acceptance: The selected server accepts the session and connection negotiation establishes a media path.
  4. Media exchange: In this CloudXR design, audio, video, and input media can travel directly between client and server rather than passing through the signaling proxy.

This separation matters: the proxy can be essential for discovery and session setup without sitting in the media path. It is one reference design, not a universal rule. Some systems may route media through an intermediary or use another topology.

Possible proxy implementations

NVIDIA lists a dedicated service, an API gateway, or a load balancer with WebSocket support as possible proxy approaches. HAProxy, nginx, Envoy, and custom WebSocket applications are examples in that guidance, not a blanket endorsement or a guarantee that any one option fits every deployment.

How NAT, reachability, and security affect the connection

Signaling connectivity and media connectivity are separate concerns. A client may reach a public proxy successfully while the server’s media address remains unreachable because it is behind cloud NAT or otherwise unavailable to the client.

In NVIDIA’s reference, ICE is used to negotiate connectivity, and STUN can help discover a public-facing media candidate when the server is behind NAT and ICE is enabled. STUN does not by itself guarantee that media can pass. Networks that block negotiated UDP traffic may require allowlisting, forwarding, or a deployment-specific relay strategy. A signaling proxy alone cannot promise a working media path.

The CloudXR guidance recommends a trusted, CA-signed HTTPS certificate for the public-facing secure WebSocket connection. It describes checking credentials in WebSocket upgrade headers, keeping server instances behind a firewall, and controlling access as sessions are established. Authentication and encryption between proxy and server remain deployment decisions; these recommendations are not a complete security standard.

What determines responsiveness and quality?

Perceived responsiveness depends on the whole path: input transit, remote processing and rendering, encoding, return-network transit, client decoding, and display. A slow or congested stage can add delay even if the others perform well.

Meta describes using edge locations closer to users, GPU encoding, and client hardware decoding in its own cloud gaming system. These are examples of engineering approaches, not guarantees of a particular experience or universal latency targets (Meta Engineering). The sources cited here do not establish a general numeric latency threshold or bandwidth requirement.

How to compare cloud streaming designs

For an architecture decision, compare the actual responsibilities and paths rather than treating “proxy” as a complete description of a system.

  • Media path: Does the proxy carry media, or does it handle signaling while media travels directly between client and server?
  • Session setup: How are clients authenticated, and how does the system select an available backend?
  • Network reachability: How are ICE and STUN used, and is a relay or additional network configuration needed?
  • Infrastructure location: Where are GPU resources relative to users, and what network routes must carry interactive traffic?
  • Security ownership: Who manages public certificates, authentication, firewall rules, and protection between proxy and server?

The right choices depend on the application, network environment, security requirements, and infrastructure. A design that works in one deployment should not be assumed to work unchanged in another.

ITU-T J.1312 (03/2025) frames cloud gaming service infrastructure in terms of hardware resources, resource management, and game instances (ITU-T J.1312 summary). These standards provide broader service context; the NVIDIA CloudXR documentation is the more specific source for the proxy and connection flow described above.

Keep a YouTube channel live without running a local streaming setup

Cloud gaming architecture is about running interactive applications remotely. A different cloud use case is keeping a YouTube channel live by looping videos uploaded in advance. StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific job: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo attempts automatic recovery. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
