RTMP, HLS and WebRTC do different jobs. RTMP commonly carries a live feed from an encoder to a streaming platform; HLS delivers streams to viewers over HTTP, often through CDNs; and WebRTC supports real-time, interactive audio and video. Choosing between them starts with identifying whether you need to send a stream, distribute it, or let people communicate with very little delay.
What each protocol is for
RTMP: sending a feed to a platform
RTMP is commonly used for contribution, or ingest: an encoder sends a live feed to a streaming platform. It is not generally the viewer playback format. A platform can receive an RTMP feed and repackage it for delivery through another protocol. Wowza notes that browsers no longer play RTMP natively, so a browser-based audience typically needs a different delivery path. Wowza’s protocol documentation describes the protocols it supports and their roles.
HLS: delivering streams to viewers
HLS sends live or on-demand audio and video over HTTP. Apple describes it as using ordinary web servers and content delivery networks, with reliability and adaptation to changing network conditions among its design goals. Wowza describes HLS delivery as segmented and adaptive-bitrate: the player can use available renditions suited to the viewer’s connection. See Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming overview and Wowza’s protocol documentation.
Standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) are distinct variants. LL-HLS is intended to reduce delay relative to conventional HLS, but the achievable delay depends on the implementation and the whole delivery chain.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
WebRTC: real-time communication
WebRTC is a set of technologies and browser APIs for real-time communication, commonly used for interactive audio and video. RTP is required as WebRTC’s media transport protocol. The W3C WebRTC specification defines the browser-facing API; IETF RFC 8834 specifies WebRTC’s use of RTP.
Quick comparison
| Protocol | Typical role | Good fit when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Encoder-to-platform contribution or ingest | You need an encoder to send a feed to a service that accepts RTMP | Do not assume browsers can play the incoming RTMP feed natively; the service may need to repackage it for viewers |
| HLS | Viewer delivery over HTTP | You need broad delivery, CDN support and adaptive playback | Conventional HLS can have noticeable delay; LL-HLS is a separate option, and actual performance varies |
| WebRTC | Real-time, often browser-based communication | Participants need to interact with little end-to-end delay | Performance and scale depend on the service architecture, network and implementation |
This is a comparison of typical roles, not a claim that only one protocol can appear in a complete streaming system. A platform can receive one protocol and deliver another.

How to choose for your workflow
Choose by the job, not just the protocol name
- For contribution: Check which ingest formats your platform accepts. RTMP is a common choice for sending an encoder’s live feed to a platform.
- For one-to-many viewer delivery: Consider HLS when broad reach, HTTP/CDN delivery and adaptive playback matter more than the lowest possible delay.
- For live interaction: Consider WebRTC when participants need to talk, respond or otherwise communicate in real time, particularly in browser-based workflows.
- Check the full playback path: Confirm the service, player, browsers and devices support the delivery format you intend to use. An ingest protocol accepted by a platform does not necessarily describe what viewers receive.
- Set a delay target: Decide how much end-to-end delay your use case can tolerate, then verify the service’s performance for that specific workflow rather than relying on a protocol label.
- Check adaptation and features: If viewers have varied connections, ask whether the delivery path supports adaptive bitrates and whether the player can switch among renditions. Confirm any other required playback features with the provider.
Latency: use figures with their context
Protocol names alone do not guarantee a particular end-to-end delay. Encoding, segment or packet handling, network conditions, player behavior and service architecture all affect what a viewer experiences. The IETF’s RFC 9317 discusses operational considerations for low-latency streaming.
Wowza’s 2024 WebRTC workflows in Wowza Video page gives 15–20 seconds as typical for HLS and 500 milliseconds or less for WebRTC in the workflows it discusses. Those are vendor-provided workflow figures, not protocol-wide guarantees.

Wowza’s current WebRTC overview, accessed in 2026, separately compares WebRTC at under 500 ms, LL-HLS and RTMP at 2–5 seconds, and HLS or MPEG-DASH at 10–30 seconds. These ranges are also vendor comparisons, not standardized benchmarks, and they differ from figures on its 2024 workflow page. Treat them as indicative of those described workflows, not promises for another service or setup.
Why a platform may use more than one
In a common live workflow, an encoder contributes a feed to a platform, which then prepares one or more viewer delivery paths. RTMP may be used for ingest while HLS serves a broad audience; a separate WebRTC path may serve people who need real-time interaction. The appropriate arrangement depends on the platform’s supported inputs and outputs, the audience’s devices, the desired scale and the acceptable delay.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For documentary premieres, interviews or other one-to-many viewing, the main question may be whether viewers can access a stable stream on their devices rather than whether every viewer receives sub-second video. For a live discussion where participants respond to one another, interaction and delay matter more. Choose the delivery path around the audience experience, not a general assumption that the newest-sounding protocol is always best.

Before using any prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights to stream it and that the channel’s content complies with YouTube’s rules. A live label does not change copyright obligations, and repeatedly broadcasting material does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization or platform recommendations. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content.
