Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega play rivals who repeatedly attack—and fail to kill—each other in the darkly comic “Taste” video. Their shared ex, played by Rohan Campbell, ultimately becomes the real target: the women leave his funeral together. Directed by Dave Meyers, the video arrived on August 23, 2024, alongside Carpenter’s album Short n’ Sweet.
How the “Taste” video turns a love triangle into horror comedy
Carpenter and Ortega begin as rivals over the same boyfriend. Their attempts to eliminate one another unfold as exaggerated, cinematic set pieces rather than realistic violence. The video’s joke is that neither woman stays dead for long—and the apparent competition eventually matters less than the man they are competing over.
ABC News describes nods to Death Becomes Her, Psycho, and other films; Vogue characterizes the video as an especially gory homage to Death Becomes Her. Those influences give the attacks a knowingly theatrical quality: the violence is part of the parody, not a grim turn toward realism.
Why the ending changes the story
The women eventually recognize that their ex is clingy and insecure. The rivalry gives way to solidarity, and they leave his funeral together. That ending is the payoff behind the video’s provocative “kiss and murder each other” premise: the women survive their feud, while the man at its center does not.

Carpenter said Ortega was her first choice for the role, writing that watching her on screen was “a true dream come true.” Ortega, in turn, joked, “I’d kill for you whenever.” Meyers described making it as “Guilty pleasure doing camp horror with these two.” The three comments were reported in Rolling Stone Australia’s behind-the-scenes coverage.
The lipstick detail in the glam-up scene
Carpenter said she enjoyed touching up her look before the video’s “other antics” began. She identified the lipstick she wore as Prada Monochrome Soft Matte Refillable Lipstick in Tonka; Vogue connected the product to the video. It is a small beauty detail within a story driven by horror pastiche and the two characters’ shifting alliance.

What Ortega later said about filming
In a later recollection attributed to Ortega in a 2026 Contactmusic report, she said the action was not choreographed: “Like we were just running around. We had no time to prep or really talk about it.” That account describes her later memory of filming, rather than a contemporaneous production note. Contactmusic published the recollection.
