Has Scary Movie 6 been released?
Yes. The project was announced in October 2024 as a new Scary Movie film involving Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, following reports of a collaboration between Miramax and Paramount. It subsequently moved through production, marketing, and theatrical distribution rather than remaining a rumor or an “in-development” reboot concept. The initial announcement was reported in 2024.

Paramount’s official pages identify the released film simply as Scary Movie. Fans and search engines still commonly call it Scary Movie 6, so both names refer to the same 2026 movie:
- Official released title: Scary Movie (2026)
- Common fan and search title: Scary Movie 6
The earlier release date of June 12, 2026, is outdated. Paramount moved the U.S. theatrical opening forward by one week to June 5, 2026. Paramount’s official movie page lists June 5, while CBS Atlanta reported the date change and connected it with the strong online response to the trailer and promotional campaign.
Scary Movie 6 cast: who returns?
The major news is the reunion of the four performers most closely associated with the original era of the franchise. Paramount has promoted them as the returning “Core Four.”
The returning Core Four
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Marlon Wayans | Shorty |
| Shawn Wayans | Ray |
| Anna Faris | Cindy |
| Regina Hall | Brenda |
The reunion matters because Marlon and Shawn Wayans starred in and co-wrote the first two Scary Movie films, while Keenen Ivory Wayans directed those first two entries. The 2026 movie therefore brings the Wayans-led original creative and performance identity back to the series after the franchise moved on to different central casts. Paramount’s announcement details the Core Four reunion.

Several names in the broader cast are returning franchise alumni, while others are newer additions or recognizable performers. Their screen time and function vary: some play characters, some may appear as themselves, and some appearances are brief or cameo-like. The safest reference for the completed movie is the current cast-and-crew listing, not early casting rumors or fan-made lists. Names circulating in preliminary reports should not automatically be treated as confirmed major roles.
What is Scary Movie (2026) about?
In the official spoiler-free premise, the Core Four are once again targeted by a suspiciously familiar masked killer, 26 years after escaping the threat that originally connected them. The film uses their return to attack the modern entertainment industry’s obsession with reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, origin stories, elevated horror, and supposedly definitive “final chapters.” Read Paramount’s official synopsis.
Shorty, Ray, Cindy, and Brenda are now adults, but the movie is not built as a conventional, carefully plotted slasher mystery. In its finished form, it is closer to a rapid sequence of connected sketches and parody set pieces, with the returning characters providing the connective tissue. The Associated Press describes the structure as a loosely connected series of sketches and spoof sequences.
This article deliberately does not reveal the killer’s identity, major cameos, post-credit material, or ending.
Which horror movies and trends does it parody?
Scary Movie draws from a large group of recent horror releases and pop-culture subjects rather than building the entire movie around one target. It is useful to separate what was visible in marketing from what was later identified in reviews.

Titles visible or explicitly promoted in the trailer
The trailer and official promotional material point toward parody material involving:
- Scream
- M3GAN
- Smile
- Sinners
- Wednesday
- Get Out
- Longlegs
- Weapons
- The Substance
- Ma
- Terrifier
- Candyman
Rotten Tomatoes’ pre-release guide identified several of those references from trailer footage and comments by Marlon Wayans. Paramount+ also specifically highlighted the M3GAN films, the Smile films, Sinners, and Wednesday.

Post-release coverage from the Associated Press identifies sequences or jokes involving:
- Terrifier 3
- Sinners
- Weapons
- M3GAN
- Get Out
- Candyman
- The Substance
- Final Destination
- KPop Demon Hunters
The movie also includes topical jokes about contemporary controversies and pop-culture subjects. That does not mean each title receives a full-length parody. Some references are brief visual gags, quotations, character jokes, or single sequences.
Earlier creator teases
Before release, Marlon Wayans discussed possible targets including Get Out, Longlegs, Heretic, and Sinners, as well as the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer franchises. Those comments are best treated as pre-release teases, not a guarantee that every named film receives a substantial scene in the final cut. The pre-release interview coverage is collected here.
Watch the official trailer
The official trailer features Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall, along with the film’s modern horror references. It initially made a surprise theatrical appearance before screenings of Scream 7 and was subsequently released online through Paramount channels.

Director, writers, and production
Michael Tiddes directs
Michael Tiddes directed the film; some listings shorten his name to Mike Tiddes. He is not the director of the original Scary Movie films—that was Keenen Ivory Wayans—but he continues a spoof-comedy partnership with Marlon Wayans from the A Haunted House films.
The Wayans-led writing team
The credited writers are:
- Marlon Wayans
- Shawn Wayans
- Keenen Ivory Wayans
- Craig Wayans
- Rick Alvarez
The producer credits also include Rick Alvarez, Craig Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. Current listings identify Miramax as the principal production company, with Paramount Pictures distributing the movie. The completed production and credit listings are available through Rotten Tomatoes.
Filming in Atlanta
Principal photography took place in the Atlanta area, and CBS Atlanta reported that the entire film was shot there. Production reporting identified Tyler Perry Studios in southwest Atlanta as the main production base. The photography period was reported as approximately October 1 through November 24, 2025, with filming wrapping on November 24 ahead of post-production.
Rank #3
- An instant library of 50 horrorics assembled on 12 DVD's.
Because the exact dates come from local and production reporting rather than a clearly published studio production document, they should be understood as reported dates. CBS Atlanta covered the Atlanta shoot, while location reporting identified Tyler Perry Studios and the approximate schedule. Scream Horror Magazine reported the November 24 wrap.
Release date and theatrical formats
The film’s release timeline is straightforward once the old date is separated from the final one:
- October 2024: The new project was announced.
- June 12, 2026: The original announced U.S. release date.
- June 5, 2026: Paramount’s final U.S. wide theatrical release date, moved forward by one week.
Paramount marketed the theatrical release in standard cinemas as well as Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and premium large-format screens. Whether it is still playing near you on August 10 depends on local schedules; digital availability is the more dependable option. Paramount’s release campaign lists the premium formats.
Rating, runtime, and content warning
Scary Movie is rated R and runs approximately 95–96 minutes, depending on the listing. The rating cites crude sexual content, graphic nudity, strong violence, drug content, and language throughout. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film’s rating and runtime information, while the AP review reports the rating reasons.
It should not be treated as family entertainment or as a suitable movie for younger teenagers simply because it is a comedy. Parents and viewers sensitive to explicit sexual material, nudity, graphic violence, drugs, or sustained profanity should take the R rating seriously.
How to watch Scary Movie now
Digital rental and purchase
As of August 10, Paramount’s official movie page labels the film “Now on Digital”. Retailer listings identify digital availability through services including Apple TV, Amazon/Prime Video, and Fandango at Home. The digital release began on or around July 21, 2026, according to retailer listings and trade coverage.
Reported U.S. premium-video-on-demand pricing was approximately $24.99 to buy and $19.99 to rent. Prices, rental periods, territories, and available versions can change by retailer. Check Paramount’s digital and Extended Cut page and the individual retailer listing before paying.
The Extended Cut
Paramount is promoting an Extended Cut containing additional scenes and new material. Do not assume that every digital storefront presents exactly the same version, bonus content, or labeling. Before purchasing, check whether the listing specifically says Extended Cut or simply identifies the theatrical/digital movie.

Is Scary Movie 6 on Paramount+?
There was no verified official Paramount+ subscription-release date for the 2026 film in the sources reviewed as of August 10. In other words, “available digitally” means a premium rental or purchase—not necessarily included with a Paramount+ subscription.
Paramount+ does have the first five Scary Movie films listed in its franchise guide, but readers should not infer from that availability that the sixth film has already joined the subscription catalog. Recheck the official Paramount+ franchise guide before publication or viewing.

Physical media
Home-media listings have reported a September 22, 2026 DVD and Blu-ray date. Paramount’s official page reviewed for this guide did not clearly confirm the physical-release details, so September 22 should be treated as reported rather than guaranteed. The availability of 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, bonus features, and the Extended Cut should be rechecked with Paramount Home Entertainment or the retailer closer to release.
JustWatch’s U.S. listing is useful for comparing current digital, theatrical, and home-media availability, but retailer prices and subscription catalogs can change.

Do you need to watch the first five films?
No. The 2026 movie is designed as a contemporary revival and can be watched on its own. The returning characters provide continuity, but the film’s main targets are current horror movies and trends rather than an intricate franchise mythology.
The first film is the most useful preparation because it establishes Cindy, Brenda, Ray, Shorty, the Ghostface-style killer, and the original Scream/I Know What You Did Last Summer framework. Scary Movie 2 is also helpful for jokes and characters associated with the Wayans era. Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 provide additional franchise context, while Scary Movie V is the least essential because it has a different central cast and a looser connection to the Wayans-led continuity.
For a complete franchise rewatch, use this order:
- Scary Movie (2000)
- Scary Movie 2 (2001)
- Scary Movie 3 (2003)
- Scary Movie 4 (2006)
- Scary Movie V (2013)
- Scary Movie (2026)
Paramount’s guide provides the release-order list and identifies the first five movies as available on Paramount+ in its current franchise presentation.

Critical and audience response
Reception has been mixed, with audiences more receptive than critics in the latest available ratings check. Rotten Tomatoes listed approximately 23% from critics and 64% from verified audience ratings in early August 2026. Those scores are date-sensitive and can change.
The Associated Press awarded the film 1.5 out of 4 stars. Its review describes an uneven, loosely connected rapid-fire spoof with some successful jokes but no especially tight horror-comedy structure. The split is useful context, not a final verdict: fans seeking the original cast and the franchise’s broad gag-driven style may respond differently from critics judging the film as a cohesive narrative.
Commercial performance
Trade coverage reported an opening of approximately $55 million domestically and a production budget of roughly $30 million. The Numbers lists approximately $108.3 million domestic and $231.3 million worldwide in its current franchise data. These totals can continue to update and may vary slightly between reporting services, so they should not be treated as studio-certified financial figures without a specific studio statement.
TheWrap reported the opening and budget figures, while The Numbers tracks the franchise totals.
What the title and marketing do—and do not—confirm
- It is the sixth film: “Scary Movie 6” is a reasonable search label, but the official title is Scary Movie.
- It is a revival: “Reboot,” “rebootquel,” and “legacy sequel” can describe its positioning, but Paramount’s official synopsis does not formally define it with one of those labels.
- It is not confirmed to be the final film: References to “final chapters” belong to the movie’s parody of horror trends. They are not an announcement that the franchise ends here.
- It does not fully parody every title mentioned in interviews: A reference in a trailer or a creator tease may be only a brief gag in the finished cut.
- It is not automatically a Paramount+ title: Digital rental and purchase are separate from subscription streaming.
