American singer-songwriter Todd Snider died on November 14, 2025, at age 59. His record label announced his death the following day. Reports said he had been diagnosed with pneumonia at a hospital in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and that his condition became more complicated before he was transferred. The death announcement did not give a cause, so pneumonia is reported medical context—not a confirmed cause of death.

A songwriter who made room for stories
Across a career spanning roughly three decades, Snider moved among folk, rock, country, roots, blues, alt-country and funk. The Associated Press described him as a songwriter shaped by mentors including Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark and John Prine. His songs were recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver and Tom Jones; he also co-wrote a song on Loretta Lynn’s 2016 album Full Circle.

Onstage, songs often shared space with an ongoing spoken monologue. That mix of performance and storytelling suited a writer known for sharp turns of phrase as well as tenderness. His label’s tribute, published by the AP on November 15, said: “He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens.”
Where to start listening
Snider’s catalogue offers several useful entry points, from the debut that introduced his songwriting to a later album often singled out by critics and the record released shortly before his death.
