What happened at the Empire State Building?
The Empire State Building, Disney Consumer Products, and Lucasfilm staged the takeover on March 21, 2024, as part of the “March to May the 4th” campaign. The campaign marked the approach to Star Wars Day while promoting licensed products and fan experiences. Hayden Christensen, who portrays Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, took part in a morning lighting ceremony. The venue also advertised themed displays, character appearances, photo opportunities, and an evening light show. What could visitors see inside?
The event mixed character displays and licensed merchandise with opportunities to take photos and participate in fan activities. A Darth Vader-themed reveal appeared in the Fifth Avenue lobby windows. Displays included LEGO and Funko items, while a Hasbro and Amazon fan experience offered another activity. Visitors could also sample TruMoo blue milk. On the 80th floor, life-sized Darth Vader and Darth Maul figures built from LEGO bricks formed part of the display; they were not identified as a specific retail set. A screening on March 22
The program continued the next day with a March 22, 2024 screening of The Empire Strikes Back on the 80th floor. The historical event page said the screening ticket also included access to the 86th- and 102nd-floor observatories. This was a special event arrangement, not a standing feature of regular Observatory admission.

When was the Star Wars light show, and what song played?
The main nighttime spectacle was a five-minute montage projected onto the building’s south-side façade. It combined scenes from the Star Wars saga, emphasizing villains such as Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and stormtroopers. The visuals were synchronized to John Williams’ “The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme).” The Empire State Building says the show ran in intervals from 8 to 11 p.m. on March 21, synchronized with a broadcast of the music on iHeartRadio’s Z100. Disney’s announcement gives the show’s stated duration and focus; the venue retrospective supplies the location and evening schedule.
Why did the projection need to be designed for the building?
A skyscraper façade is not a flat cinema screen. Its architecture affects how projected images appear, so the visuals had to be adapted to the building and to the story being told. Khatsho Orfali, an ILM visual effects supervisor involved in the project, explained: “The need to think about it differently is that there are many unique things that need to be taken into account to make sure that what gets put on this facade will actually translate correctly and will work correctly, visually and as part of the overall story,” Lucasfilm’s behind-the-scenes account identifies Orfali’s role and describes that production challenge.

Was the event temporary?
Yes. The takeover was a historical promotional event, not a current attraction. The venue’s announcement said Star Wars photo opportunities and product displays would run through April 29, 2024. Those dates have passed. The Empire State Building still offers its regular Observatory experience, but ordinary admission should not be confused with access to the 2024 Star Wars displays or light show.
