What is Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam?
The Istanbul Film Festival lists Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam as a 1982 Turkish color film, running 91 minutes in its DCP listing. Directed by Çetin İnanç and written by Cüneyt Arkın, it stars Arkın alongside Aytekin Akkaya, Füsun Uçar, Hüseyin Peyda, Hikmet Taşdemir and Necla Fide. The film belongs to a wave of Turkish genre cinema responding to the international popularity of Star Wars. Its mix of science-fiction adventure and fighting-film elements is part of its identity: it is not simply a Turkish-language remake, but a locally made genre picture that became famous for incorporating material from other productions.
Why is it called “Turkish Star Wars”?
The nickname refers to more than a shared space-adventure premise. The Istanbul Film Festival says the film was inspired by Star Wars and borrowed some scenes. King’s College London describes footage from the 1977 film as edited into Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam, and also identifies music from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Flash Gordon and other films among the borrowed material. That documented account is enough to explain the label; more elaborate stories about how particular material was obtained or copied are not established by these sources. “Bootleg version” is therefore a catchy shorthand, not a precise description of the film’s production history.
How did a box-office failure become a cult film?
The Istanbul Film Festival describes the film as a box-office failure on its original release and says it was rediscovered in the 1990s, when it became known internationally as “Turkish Star Wars.” (İKSV) The festival’s account gives no reliable box-office total, so the failure is best understood as a qualitative description rather than a figure.

A 2026 article in sinecine traces its circulation in Turkey through video cassettes, university film-club screenings and television, followed by renewed critical attention. The article places its appeal in cult-film and “paracinema” culture: viewers may value its oddities and excesses rather than judge it by conventional standards of prestige filmmaking. Was the film restored?
Yes. King’s College London reported on 4 May 2018 that film historian Ed Glaser had obtained the last remaining 35mm print in 2016. The university’s Arts & Humanities Innovation Fund supported a new 2K scan, which premiered in London and Glasgow on 4 May 2018. The restoration gives viewers a route beyond the low-quality copies associated with the film’s bootleg-era reputation. It also preserves a surviving film element through a digital scan; it does not mean every copy currently offered online or on disc comes from that restoration.
Can you watch or buy a restored copy?
There are documented physical-media editions, but the records below do not establish what is currently for sale or streaming. The 2026 sinecine article reports that Big Bosphorus Media released a limited restored Blu-ray collector’s edition in October 2021. WorldCat separately catalogs a Turkish-language DVD Video edition published by Fanatik Video in Istanbul and dated 1982. If searching for a copy, “Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam Blu-ray” is a useful starting phrase, not a guarantee that a listing is the restored 2021 edition. Check the specific item’s edition details, language and subtitle options, region compatibility, playback requirements and seller.
