In Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), “Wolverine’s universe” is not the Wolverine’s world at all. It is Wade Wilson’s home reality, Earth-10005, and it starts to collapse because its original Wolverine, Logan, is dead. Wade recruits a different Wolverine variant, but that variant does not bring Logan back or take his place. By the ending, Deadpool and the variant stop the threat, Earth-10005 survives, and the variant stays in Wade’s reality.
Which universe is at risk
The title’s phrasing is the source of most confusion. The film’s story follows Deadpool’s home reality, and that is the world under threat. Paradox, a TVA agent, identifies it as Earth-10005. Wolverine is central to the danger because of his death, not because the film shifts the stakes to a Wolverine-owned universe.

Marvel’s official overview frames the premise as a fight for Wade’s homeworld, with Wade needing to convince a reluctant Wolverine to help. That framing matches the plot as told in TIME’s plot and ending explainer.
Why Logan’s death puts Earth-10005 at risk
Paradox tells Wade that Earth-10005 is deteriorating because Logan was its “anchor being,” the figure holding that reality together. Logan’s death in Logan is the event the film cites as the cause. The anchor-being idea is the film’s central mechanism, and it is explained in more detail in ComicBook.com’s coverage of the anchor-being premise.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Because the danger comes from the loss of that anchor, the film’s problem is not simply that Wade lacks a Wolverine. The problem is that Earth-10005 has lost the person its existence depended on.
The Wolverine Wade recruits
Wade’s solution is to find another Wolverine. The TVA tells him that a variant cannot simply substitute for the original anchor, which is why the recruit does not solve the crisis by replacement. The table below separates the two characters the film asks viewers to keep apart.

| Question | Original Logan | Recruited Wolverine |
|---|---|---|
| Identity in the film | The anchor of Earth-10005, whose death in Logan starts the crisis | A Wolverine variant with his own history |
| Universe of origin | Earth-10005, per the film’s setup | Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article |
| Status at the ending | Dead; not brought back | Alive; stays in Earth-10005 |
| Does he reverse Logan’s death? | Not applicable | No; he does not undo the death or replace the anchor |
The variant becomes a partner in the effort to save Wade’s reality rather than a substitute for the lost character. That distinction is the key to reading the film’s ending.
Paradox’s plan and how the film resolves it
The threat escalates when Paradox decides not to wait for the timeline to decay. The sequence runs as follows:
Rank #3
- Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine in this superhero action adventure sequel directed by Shawn Levy.
- Diagnosis. Paradox tells Wade that Earth-10005 is deteriorating because Logan, its anchor being, is dead.
- Search for a replacement anchor. Wade finds a Wolverine variant. The TVA rules out a simple substitution, so the recruit cannot stop the decay by replacing Logan.
- Escalation. Paradox plans to use the Time Ripper to hasten the destruction of the timeline rather than let it decline on its own.
- Resolution. Deadpool and the variant Wolverine defeat that plan. Earth-10005 survives, and the variant remains in Wade’s reality.
The ending therefore has two parts. Wolverine’s death starts the crisis, and the team prevents the crisis from ending Wade’s universe. Logan himself stays dead.
How the film connects its characters
The film uses the TVA and the multiverse to bring characters from different movie continuities into one story. In a filmmaker interview published by the Motion Picture Association, director Shawn Levy and writer Rhett Reese describe the variants and the TVA as storytelling tools for that crossover. This explains how the characters are brought together. It does not settle every question about how the Fox-era X-Men films fit with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What the film does not settle
- The film does not show that Logan survived his death, and it does not use the recruited Wolverine to erase the events of Logan.
- No source reviewed here establishes a definitive chronology for every X-Men film, and none resolves every continuity inconsistency between the earlier films and this one.
- Wider readings of how the earlier films connect are interpretation, not something the film states outright.
For the plot itself, the mechanics the film states are clear: Earth-10005, Logan’s death, a variant Wolverine, and the TVA’s intervention.
