How is Wolverine alive after Logan? He is not the same Wolverine. Deadpool & Wolverine brings Hugh Jackman back as a variant from another universe, so the Wolverine who dies in Logan stays dead and that film’s ending is not undone.
Is the Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine the same one who died in Logan?
No. The returning Wolverine is a version of the character from a different universe, with a different history. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick explained that Marvel’s multiverse stories had established variants—versions of the same person who live in different universes and take different paths. That gives the film a way to pair Jackman’s Wolverine with Deadpool without reversing the events of Logan. The Credits interview with Reese and Wernick describes how they used that setup.
Does Deadpool & Wolverine undo Logan’s ending?
No. In 2022, Ryan Reynolds said Logan is set in 2029 and separate from the then-untitled Deadpool team-up, and that Wolverine’s death would not be touched. The finished film follows that promise by introducing a different Wolverine rather than reviving the one who died. Reynolds and Jackman’s 2022 announcement video captures the exchange: Jackman asks how Wolverine can be alive after Logan, and Reynolds begins explaining that the stories are separate.
How do the multiverse, the TVA, and the Void fit in?
The film uses Marvel’s multiverse concepts as the story mechanism. Reese said the writers saw a way to use the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and the Void—story elements audiences had already encountered—to bring a Wolverine variant into Deadpool’s story. They are plot devices for the variant’s journey, not a resurrection of Logan’s Wolverine. Reese and Wernick’s interview discusses those choices.

What is the “anchor being” explanation?
Within the film’s plot, Deadpool is told that Wolverine’s death puts his world at risk, prompting him to look for another Wolverine. The movie calls the figure whose existence is tied to a universe’s fate an “anchor being.” Treat that as the film’s fictional rule and motivation for Deadpool’s search—not as a universal rule of Marvel continuity. Why did Hugh Jackman return to the role?
The in-story answer is the multiverse; Jackman’s real-world reason was creative. He had thought Logan would be his final appearance as Wolverine, but after watching Deadpool, he imagined a buddy-comedy pairing with Reynolds that he wanted to play. Jackman described the impulse as: “I don’t know why. I just knew every cell in my body was yelling at me: ‘I wanna do this movie,’” Jackman’s comments to D23 recount his decision.
