In the opening episode of Yellowstone, “Daybreak” (Season 1, Episode 1), Lee is shot during a nighttime cattle recovery connected to a dispute with Broken Rock. Robert Long fires the shot that wounds him, Kayce shoots Long in the immediate aftermath, and Lee dies from the wound. His death sets up the question of who will run the Dutton ranch.
Who Lee Dutton is
Lee is the eldest child of John and Evelyn Dutton and is played by Dave Annable. According to Peacock’s Yellowstone character guide, he works as a cowboy at the Yellowstone ranch and as a livestock agent, and he is positioned to take over ranch management. That positioning is the reason his death matters beyond the episode itself: the guide ties it directly to who will inherit the ranch.
How the death unfolds in “Daybreak”
The confrontation grows out of a cattle dispute with members of the Broken Rock community, one of the tensions the series builds around its neighboring reservation. The published screenplay for “Daybreak” lays out the sequence of events:
- The nighttime recovery. Dutton cattle are being recovered from Broken Rock land at night, which places the Duttons in direct conflict with Broken Rock members.
- The shot. Robert Long shoots Lee. The screenplay describes the bullet striking below the collarbone.
- The fall. Lee falls from his horse.
- Kayce reaches him. Kayce Dutton gets to his brother, and Lee dies after Kayce arrives.
- Kayce’s response. Kayce shoots Robert Long. Long is the shooter, and Kayce’s shot ends the immediate confrontation, but it does not save Lee.
Because the wound is fatal, the episode treats Lee’s death as the event that changes the family, not as a survivable injury that is later resolved.

Why his death matters for the ranch
Lee’s death removes the Dutton heir who was being groomed to take over management. That leaves a succession question at the center of the family’s conflicts for the rest of the early season. The character guide frames the loss in exactly these terms, which is why recaps and episode guides treat the death as a turning point rather than a standalone violent moment.
Identifying the episode
Paramount+ Canada lists “Daybreak” as Season 1, Episode 1 of Yellowstone. Some recaps and guides call the same episode the pilot or the premiere, so readers searching by any of those labels are looking at the same installment. TVLine’s independent recap of the premiere also identifies Robert Long as the shooter, which corroborates the account above.

What the sources establish, and what they do not
The core facts are consistent across the character guide, the published screenplay, the Paramount+ Canada episode listing and the TVLine recap: Lee dies, Long shoots him, the cause is the cattle dispute with Broken Rock, and the event opens Season 1. The screenplay is the most detailed account, but it is a script, so the exact on-screen staging may differ in small ways from the written description. The screenplay’s dialogue is fictional and should be read as part of the drama rather than as a factual statement about real people or events.
No real-world statistics or external factual quotations apply to this question, because it concerns a fictional plot point.
