Barbra Streisand accepted SAG-AFTRA’s 59th Life Achievement Award at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 24, 2024. In her speech, she described acting as a way to study and understand people, recalled dreaming of acting as a teenager in Brooklyn, and thanked fellow performers for the joy they had given her.
What Streisand said in her acceptance speech
In the speech excerpts published by SAG-AFTRA, Streisand connected acting with learning about the people she portrayed. “I always thought acting was my education: trying to understand the character, having to do research, and immersing [myself] into the period,” she said. She called being part of the profession a privilege and reflected on the escape movies can offer: “For a couple of hours, people can sit in a theater and escape their own troubles — what an idea!”

She also thanked actors and directors she had worked with, saying she had loved “working with you, playing with you and inhabiting that magical world of the movies with you.” She added that watching them on screen had brought her great joy.
The memories and history she brought into the speech
The Associated Press reported that Streisand recalled being a teenager in Brooklyn, dreaming of acting while sitting with coffee ice cream and a movie magazine, and being transfixed by Marlon Brando. She also recognized Jewish pioneers of Hollywood and said, “Now I dream of a world where such prejudice is a thing of the past.”

Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper presented Streisand with the award during the ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. SAG-AFTRA announced her as the 59th recipient on December 14, 2023; the presentation took place on February 24, 2024, at the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

What the SAG Life Achievement Award recognizes
SAG-AFTRA describes the annual Life Achievement Award as recognizing an actor who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession.” The union also says recipients have contributed to improving the image of acting and have a record of active public service. Its announcement said Streisand was being honored for career achievements and humanitarian accomplishments.
Netflix’s announcement noted that more than 119,000 performers were eligible to vote in the awards. That figure refers to the voting body, not the audience for the ceremony or a vote tally for Streisand’s award.
