There is no single best seat in every theatre. The right choice depends on the auditorium’s sightlines, your preferred distance from the stage, access needs, comfort and ticket price—and the specific production’s set. Start with the venue’s seating plan, then check any seat-view images and restricted-view notes for the exact seats you are considering.
How to choose a theatre seat
Compare the actual seats rather than assuming that a section name guarantees a particular experience. “Stalls,” “Dress Circle,” “Gallery” and “Circle” describe different levels or areas, but their distance from the stage, elevation, layout and access arrangements vary between venues.
- Open the venue’s seating plan. Identify the level and row, and note the seat’s position relative to the stage and any aisles.
- Check the view from that location. Use a seat-view tool or virtual tour if available, and read the venue’s restricted-view notes.
- Consider the production. Set design can affect what is visible, especially from seats at the sides or behind rails and other obstructions.
- Confirm access and comfort. Check the route to the actual seat, as well as seat details that matter to you.
- Weigh certainty against price. Compare ticket categories and cost with the view information; do not assume a cheaper seat has the same sightline as a central one.
Theatre Royal Bath’s seating plan and virtual tour illustrates how a venue can pair its own seat guidance with view information. The theatre identifies the middle seats in its Luxury Royal Circle as its best seats, but that is a recommendation for Bath’s auditorium, not a general rule for other theatres.
What to look for in the view
Position across the row
A central seat may give a more direct view, but check the venue’s notes and images rather than treating “central” as a guarantee. Seats towards the sides can have an angled view, and the shape of the auditorium or production set may conceal parts of the stage. Nottingham’s theatre guidance, for example, warns that some off-centre Stalls seats can miss parts of the stage because of curved rows and set design.

Distance and elevation
Seats nearer the stage can make expressions and other details easier to see, while a more distant or elevated seat can provide a broader view of the staging. The balance depends on the room’s geometry: the names and levels alone do not tell you how far away a particular row is or how steeply the seats rise.
Obstructions and production setup
Look for notes about restricted views, rails and pillars, and check whether the seat-view image shows the relevant area clearly. Nottingham warns that handrails can partly block some central seats on upper levels. A view can also change with the production’s set, so a seat image is useful evidence about the location, not a guarantee that every show will look identical.

How the main seating areas compare
| Area | What it may suit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Stalls | A lower-level seat, if you prefer to be closer to the stage or avoid upper levels. | Side-angle sightlines, curved rows, production-specific obstructions and the route to the seat. Stalls access is not automatically step-free. |
| Dress Circle or another Circle level | A different, elevated perspective; a venue may recommend particular rows or seats for their view. | Row-specific rails, distance, stairs and lift access. Bath recommends middle Luxury Royal Circle seats in its own auditorium; Nottingham notes that handrails can partly block some central upper-level seats. |
| Gallery or balcony | A high-level view, depending on the venue’s layout and rake. | Distance, seating type, visibility and access. Theatre Royal Tasmania describes its Gallery as bench-only and notes that small children may have difficulty seeing; this is a venue-specific warning. |
| Boxes | A distinct seating configuration whose experience depends on the box and its position. | The specific box’s angle and view. Consult the venue’s plan or seat-view tool; there is no general evidence that boxes are better. |
These are starting points, not a ranking. Nottingham’s warning about some off-centre Stalls seats and some upper-level handrails shows why a seat’s exact position can matter more than its section label.
Check the actual seat before booking
Use the venue’s own tools where available, since they can show the layout and views for that auditorium. Theatre Royal Bath offers a virtual tour intended to help patrons examine seating and views. Theatre Royal Sydney provides a 360-degree view-from-seat function.

For mobility or other access needs, check the complete route: entrance, lift or stairs, any steps within the auditorium, wheelchair space or companion seating, and whether a transfer is possible. A seat on a named level is not necessarily reachable by a step-free route.

- Theatre Royal Nottingham advises patrons who require step-free access to book Stalls seats because its upper levels have stairs to the seating. Check with the venue about the specific route and seat.
- Theatre Royal Sydney describes a specific accessible row in its Circle and stair requirements for its Stalls. Use its venue information to assess the arrangement for the seat you want.
- Theatre Royal Tasmania publishes information about accessible options in its seating plans.
For an access requirement, confirm arrangements directly with the venue before booking; general descriptions of a seating area may not answer whether a particular seat and route will work for you.
Consider comfort as well as sightline
Seat width, armrests and bench seating can make a substantial difference to the experience. Check venue-specific information if those details matter, rather than assuming that the same seat dimensions apply across theatres.

These figures describe Bath’s seats, not a theatre-wide standard. The venue also notes that Stalls Row O is a padded bench without armrests. See its access information and booking guidance for those details.
Quick Recap
Choose by the trade-off that matters to you
- For the most direct view: look for a seat with a clear sightline and check the view image and restrictions, especially if it is off-centre.
- For a broad view of the staging: compare elevated seats with the Stalls, using the venue’s layout to judge distance and angle.
- For step-free access: ask the venue to confirm the route to the exact seat and any transfer or wheelchair-space arrangements.
- For comfort: check dimensions, armrests and whether the location uses individual seats or a bench.
- For value: compare the ticket category and price with the actual view information, rather than relying on a section label.
