But that is not an undisputed answer to what happened: the directors’ account differs from the interpretation attributed to the film’s screenwriters, and Joe Russo said the directors did not know the details of Steve and Peggy’s life together.
What mystery did the directors address?
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve returns the Infinity Stones and then appears as an old man, handing his shield to Sam Wilson. The film leaves his intervening life with Peggy Carter off screen. The lingering question is how Steve could have lived that life and still returned to the main timeline to meet Sam.

The Russos’ reported explanation: a branch reality
In a 2021 report, BGR described the Russo brothers’ internal explanation as Steve living with Peggy in a branch reality. In that account, he later traveled back to the main timeline to give Sam the shield. The explanation addresses the timeline problem without requiring Steve’s life with Peggy to take place in the same history the audience has followed.
Joe Russo also said the directors did not know the particulars of Steve’s life with Peggy. Asked whether they knew what Steve did during that time, he replied, “Nope, no idea,” according to BGR. Russo’s reported explanation focuses on how Steve could return to give Sam the shield, not on the details of the couple’s years together.

Why the answer is not settled
BGR’s report also describes a different interpretation from screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely: Steve lived his life with Peggy in the main timeline. That differs from the Russos’ reported branch-reality explanation. Under the writers’ view, Steve’s later appearance is part of that same timeline; under the directors’ account, he returns from a branch reality.
Because the film does not spell out the mechanics, and the report records a disagreement rather than a shared explanation, neither interpretation should be treated as an uncontested answer established by the movie. The directors’ comments clarify their reported view of how Steve reached Sam; they do not reveal a detailed account of Steve and Peggy’s life together.
