The third film keeps the series’ puzzle-box mystery and humor, but shifts toward a more grounded, gothic story about faith, guilt and human fallibility.
What is Wake Up Dead Man about?
Blanc arrives at a church with a dark history to investigate a crime that seems impossible. Local police chief Geraldine Scott, played by Mila Kunis, joins him, while the case draws in young priest Jud Duplenticy, played by Josh O’Connor. The story sets faith and reason against each other without giving away how the mystery is solved. Netflix Tudum describes the case as testing the boundaries of faith and reason.
Other key figures include Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), a charismatic but tyrannical church leader, and Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), his most devoted follower. The ensemble also includes Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny and Daryl McCormack. Netflix’s title listing identifies the film as a 2025 crime mystery, comedy and thriller.
Is it the third Knives Out movie?
Yes. It follows Knives Out (2019), in which Blanc investigates a family gathered at a New England mansion after its patriarch’s death, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), which turns its attention to tech-world excess on a Greek island. The third film moves the action to an upstate New York church and shifts its thematic focus to belief. Netflix Tudum outlines that progression.

What makes this mystery darker?
Writer-director Rian Johnson described the change as a move away from the “big, broad, fun vacation mystery” of Glass Onion. In a Netflix Tudum interview, he said: “So this one explores faith a little bit, and it tonally goes to more of an Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving type of place. It goes to gothic horror, but it’s still funny, I hope.” That is Johnson’s description of the intended tone, not a claim that the film abandons the series’ comic mystery framework.
The church gives the story a setting where questions of guilt, morality and belief naturally meet. Johnson said, “Themes of guilt, mystery, morality, and fallible humanity all feel right at home in a church, with a man of God in the center of the mix.” He also called it Blanc’s “most personal journey yet.”

What inspired Wake Up Dead Man?
The film is an original Benoit Blanc mystery, not an adaptation of a Father Brown story. The Associated Press reports that Johnson drew on G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown mysteries, which pair a priest with detective work. That connection helps explain the appeal of placing a priest at the center of a murder mystery while keeping the film’s plot distinct. The Associated Press discusses the influence and the film’s characters.
