Lowell, Massachusetts is a real filming location for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2, and at least one reported scene was shot at a church in the city. That makes it a worthwhile stop for fans. The stronger reason to plan a full day there, though, is Lowell’s own industrial history, museums and canals. Reporting so far does not establish that the church is open to visitors or that an official Walking Dead tour exists, so treat the show connection as a bonus rather than the whole itinerary.
What is documented about Lowell and Dead City
The Massachusetts Film Office listing
The Massachusetts Film Office’s production listing includes Walking Dead: Dead City (S2) under 2024 and names Lowell among the Massachusetts locations used. The list covers many communities, so Lowell was one of several places in the state rather than the show’s primary production base. Describe it as one filming location among many, not as the centre of the production.
The St. Jean Baptiste Church scene
The Boston Globe’s May 2, 2025 report, published ahead of the season premiere, identifies a Negan scene filmed at St. Jean Baptiste Church in Lowell. The production used the church to evoke St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the explanation is attributed to the series’ actor and executive producer Lauren Cohan. Cohan told the Globe, “We knew that we’d be able to do something really epic in this place,” and said the production was looking for spots it could transform to look like New York City. That quote is Cohan’s, as reported by the Globe; it is not a statement from the church or the city.
Real location, fictional setting
The Globe describes Dead City as a post-apocalyptic spinoff that follows Maggie and Negan in a zombified Manhattan. Lowell’s role is as a real-world stand-in for parts of that fictional city. Keep the two separate when you describe the trip: visitors are standing in Massachusetts, not in the show’s New York.

What you cannot count on
The available reporting confirms the filming, but it does not say that the church is open to visitors, that fans may enter the filming spaces, or that a Walking Dead locations tour is run in Lowell. Nor does the city promote a public Dead City tour. Plan around the church exterior unless you confirm access in advance, and treat it as private property if staff have not said otherwise. The same applies to any other site you associate with the show.
Why Lowell works as a visit in its own right
Lowell National Historical Park interprets the city’s industrial history, engineering, and the lives of people who came to Lowell for work and a new start. The National Park Service (NPS) highlights several places to start.

Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center
The Visitor Center is at 246 Market Street. It is the starting point for orientation, visitor information and the walking and canal tours.
Boott Cotton Mills Museum
The Boott Cotton Mills Museum at 115 John Street is the centrepiece for most visitors. It includes a recreated 1920s-era weave room, historical artifacts, interactive exhibits and videos. The NPS Places To Go page states that the weave room has 85 operating power looms, which is the figure to quote if you describe the room. The museum store carries mill-related books and other local-history items.

Canals, tours and city events
Ranger-led tours and canal walks round out the park experience. The city’s Office of Cultural Affairs & Special Events supports community festivals, including the Lowell Folk Festival and the Kinetic Sculpture Race, and promotes local museums, restaurants, galleries and historical tours. Event dates change every year, so check the current calendar before you book.

The NPS describes options for an afternoon or a weekend. A show-focused visit can be done in a few hours; a history-focused trip will take longer.

Watching the series
AMC and AMC+ are the outlets identified for The Walking Dead franchise in the contemporary coverage. Watch the episodes you care about before you go, since the St. Jean Baptiste scene is the reason many visitors come to Lowell.
Bottom line for fans
Lowell is a real Dead City filming location and a city with a substantial history worth seeing on its own terms. Visit for the mills, the canals and the exhibits; treat the church as a photo stop from the outside unless access is confirmed.
