Short answer: Choose based on the exact region, outbound-traffic allowance, quoted monthly cost and workload—not a provider-wide winner. Vultr has an official OBS/Broadcaster guide for a 24/7 stream, so it is the more directly documented starting point. Hetzner may be a better fit when a nearby Cloud location and the selected plan’s traffic allowance suit your stream. Neither provider’s documentation establishes that a particular server will deliver your stream continuously.
Start by deciding what the server will do
A 24/7 stream sends video from your server to YouTube continuously, so outbound transfer is a major part of the cost and capacity decision. First establish whether the VM will merely forward an already encoded feed or file, or also encode or transcode video. Those are different workloads: the latter needs testing on the actual instance class, with your resolution, frame rate and codec.
- Forwarding: Plan for the source, streaming process, network transfer and recovery. Do not assume forwarding needs the same CPU as video encoding.
- Encoding or transcoding: Test the intended workload on the exact server class. Provider descriptions of compute categories do not prove a given VM can encode a specific resolution and frame rate continuously.
- Audience and ingest location: Consider where your audience is and which YouTube ingest point is appropriate. The provider documents cited here do not supply a head-to-head YouTube ingest benchmark.
Vultr and Hetzner compared
| Decision factor | Vultr | Hetzner Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Documented streaming path | Vultr publishes an OBS-based Broadcaster marketplace guide that includes running a 24/7 stream from uploaded source files. This documents a workflow; it is not a reliability test for a particular plan. Vultr Broadcaster guide | The cited Hetzner material covers Cloud traffic, locations and service terms, not a comparable OBS/Broadcaster workflow. |
| Outbound traffic | Outbound transfer counts toward bandwidth allocations; inbound traffic is not metered toward those limits. The documented overage rate is $0.01 per GB beyond the plan allocation. Check the selected instance’s included transfer and current regional quote. Bandwidth measurement · Overage rate | Included Cloud traffic varies by product and network zone. The traffic table lists EU allowances of 20 TB for CX, CPX and CAX Cloud servers, and 20–60 TB for CCX depending on plan; US and Singapore allowances vary by product and plan. Confirm the current amount and overage terms for the exact model and zone. These figures are from Hetzner Robot Docs, last changed 2024. Hetzner traffic table |
| Regions and network zones | Prices can vary by data-center location, so check the region-specific quote in the current console. Vultr location pricing | Hetzner lists six Cloud locations across four network zones. Traffic between different zones is billed as normal internet traffic. Do not apply dedicated root server traffic terms to a Cloud VM. Hetzner Cloud locations · Cloud billing FAQ |
| Encoding compute | Vultr identifies dedicated Optimized Cloud Compute as a category for demanding uses including video transcoding. This does not establish that any particular instance can handle your stream; test it. Optimized Cloud Compute provisioning | The cited traffic, location and agreement documents do not establish a video-encoding capacity for a particular Cloud model. Test your intended workload on the exact plan. |
| Availability terms | A directly comparable availability commitment for this workload is not established by the sources cited here. | Hetzner’s Cloud agreement describes commercially reasonable efforts to achieve 99.9% monthly availability for Cloud servers, subject to contractual scope and exclusions. This is a service-agreement objective, not a guarantee of uninterrupted video delivery. Hetzner Cloud service agreement |
Estimate outbound traffic before picking a plan
Use the stream’s encoded bitrate as a first-pass estimate. At decimal units, a continuous 1 Mbps stream uses about 0.324 TB over 30 days; at 10 Mbps, that is about 3.24 TB, before audio or protocol overhead and operational variation. This is arithmetic, not a provider quote. Add a margin, then compare the result with the allowance for your exact product, region and billing terms.
- Find the target bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you will actually use.
- Multiply Mbps by 0.324 to estimate TB over 30 days. For example, 12 Mbps is approximately 3.89 TB before overhead.
- Check the plan’s included outbound traffic and overage rate for the selected location. On Vultr, the documented overage is $0.01 per GB beyond the allocation; confirm current plan details. On Hetzner, verify the current allowance and overage terms for the Cloud model and zone.
- Price the same monthly period and assumptions at both providers. Do not compare a low VM price at one provider with a different plan’s traffic allowance at the other.
Configure and validate the YouTube stream
The server choice cannot compensate for incompatible encoder settings. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and keyframe guidance. Use the current YouTube table for the codec and settings you select; its retrieved guidance lists H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

- Choose the codec, resolution and frame rate that fit your source and YouTube’s current live settings guidance.
- Set CBR and the keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current instructions. Avoid carrying forward a generic or outdated bitrate recommendation.
- Test with representative movement and audio before committing to a continuous broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- During the test and the live stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as the server process and outbound traffic.
Build recovery and security into the setup
A running VM is not the same as a stream that recovers after a process, connection or ingest failure. Plan for process supervision and restart behavior, persistent source files, monitoring and alerts, and a recovery procedure you have actually tested. Keep the stream key private: store it in an appropriately restricted configuration or secret store, limit who can read it, and rotate it if exposed. These are operational safeguards, not provider-specific features established by the cited documents.
- Verify that a process restart reconnects to YouTube and resumes the intended source.
- Check that source files remain available after a reboot, rather than existing only in temporary storage.
- Alert on process exit, loss of outbound connectivity, unusual transfer use and YouTube stream-health problems.
- Test recovery without assuming the provider’s server-availability terms guarantee video continuity.
Which provider should you choose?
- Start with Vultr if you value a directly documented OBS/Broadcaster setup path. That documentation is useful for implementation, but it is not evidence of tested reliability or a performance benchmark for your plan.
- Consider Hetzner Cloud if its available location is suitable and the exact plan’s included traffic, overage terms and live quote work for your bitrate and budget.
- For either provider, test before you commit if the server will encode or transcode. For a forwarding workload too, validate the full stream and recovery path rather than assuming a VM stays connected just because it is running.
Or let it run in the cloud
Instead of keeping a VM, OBS setup or home computer responsible for the broadcast, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud to YouTube, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
