What vMix can automate—and what it cannot
vMix’s PlayList feature can automate basic changes among inputs. Its user guide describes setting playlist item start times, durations, and transitions, which can be useful for a planned sequence within a production. vMix PlayList guide
That feature should not be mistaken for a 24/7 scheduler. vMix’s knowledge base says the software is primarily designed for single live events and does not support time-of-day scheduling. What an FFmpeg continuous-stream setup involves
FFmpeg gives a technically capable operator a scriptable way to process and encode media, but the encoder is only one piece of an unattended stream. Before choosing it, map the whole operating path: how the media sequence is read, how and when the process starts, how a failed process or dropped connection is detected, and who receives an alert or handles a failure.
- Playlist source: confirm that the source media and playlist mechanism suit your files and intended sequence.
- Scheduling: decide how the job starts, stops, or changes content at the required times.
- Process supervision: determine how the process is monitored and restarted if it exits unexpectedly.
- Network and ingest recovery: decide what should happen after a connection failure and how you will verify that YouTube is receiving the stream again.
- Operations: retain logs and establish a monitoring and alerting path appropriate to the channel’s needs.
There is no single FFmpeg command or recovery setting established here for every playlist, media format, and uptime requirement. The configuration must be designed and validated for the actual source files, host, network, and operating system; do not treat a running encoder process as proof that viewers can see a continuous stream.

Choose based on production needs and operational ownership
Choose vMix when live production matters
vMix is the better fit when an operator needs a visual workspace for live switching, graphics, and production controls, and when basic playlist-driven input changes are useful. It is also a reasonable choice when a person can run the event and handle any scheduling needs outside vMix.
Choose an FFmpeg pipeline when scripting is the priority
An FFmpeg-based approach fits operators comfortable building and maintaining scripts and the surrounding services. It can offer a programmable workflow, but the operator owns the schedule, supervision, observability, and recovery design.

Assess the ingest route separately
YouTube offers more than one ingest path. For HLS ingestion specifically, YouTube’s developer guide requires the encoder’s media playlists and media segments to conform to the HLS 2nd Edition specification.
