How should his legacy be understood?
Kilmer’s public image sometimes included a reputation for being difficult on set, but that shorthand does not capture the range of roles he took on or the praise he received from collaborators. His work moved from comic lead to action-film foil, biographical portrayal, western character actor and crime-drama performer. Mann’s comments on Heat offer one collaborator’s account of the variability behind those contrasting parts; Kilmer’s own recollections in Val acknowledge both behavior he regretted and experiences he valued.
