Documentaries about survivor testimony and institutional failure
These documentaries examine how institutions respond to sexual violence, how survivors seek justice, and how communities can enable or challenge abuse. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) lists content notes for several of its suggested films; use its film recommendations to assess suitability.
The Hunting Ground
This documentary focuses on sexual assault on college campuses and allegations of institutional cover-ups. Its emphasis is not only on individual accounts, but also on how schools respond to reports.
I AM EVIDENCE
Survivors seeking justice and the backlog of unexamined rape kits are central to this documentary. It connects individual cases with a wider problem in the handling of evidence.

The Invisible War
This film examines sexual assault in the U.S. military and the concealment or mishandling of reports. Its institutional focus makes it a distinct choice from documentaries centered mainly on campus or community response.
Roll Red Roll and Audrie & Daisy
Roll Red Roll revisits the Steubenville case and examines toxic masculinity and community response. Audrie & Daisy addresses assault alongside bullying, fear, and isolation. NSVRC’s recommendations include content notes; consult them before a group or classroom screening.

Television series and survivor accounts
Surviving R. Kelly
NSVRC describes this as a six-part Lifetime series featuring women who came forward with accounts of sexual abuse. RAINN also lists the series among its television collaborations. RAINN reported that when Lifetime aired Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning in 2020 and provided the hotline, calls to the hotline increased by 40%. That figure describes an increase during a specific broadcast period; it does not establish that the program alone caused the change.
Other television projects
RAINN’s collaboration list also includes Keep This Between Us, The Vow, and Pretty Baby. These projects broaden the range beyond feature documentaries, but the list is not a comprehensive guide to every series about sexual violence.

A Spanish #MeToo turning point
You Are Not Alone: Fighting the Wolf Pack
Netflix describes this documentary as beginning with the 2016 Sanfermines assault case and connecting it to a wider reckoning in Spain. Survivor accounts are interwoven with other cases as the film examines sexism in the judiciary, media, and society. Read the Netflix synopsis for the platform’s description.
Scripted stories about aftermath, consent, and complicity
Fiction can approach sexual violence through the actions of survivors, perpetrators, bystanders, or institutions. In a 2020 essay, TIME critic Eliana Dockterman contrasted relatively straightforward portrayals in early post-2017 works such as Bombshell and The Morning Show with other works that explored ambiguity, flawed survivors, long-term trauma, and consequences. She named The Assistant, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and Promising Young Woman, as well as television projects BoJack Horseman, Normal People, A Teacher, and I May Destroy You. This is one critic’s dated analysis, not a definitive canon or a consensus view. See TIME’s 2020 analysis.

Choosing a film or series for a group discussion
Match the title to the conversation you want to have, rather than assuming all works cover the same experience. A campus-focused documentary, a story about military accountability, and a drama centered on consent raise different questions.
- Choose the focus: survivor testimony, institutional response, public harassment allegations, community complicity, or the longer aftermath of trauma.
- Check the form and intensity: distinguish documentary from scripted drama, and review available ratings and content notes. NSVRC provides notes for several recommended films.
- Use discussion support: RAINN’s Luckiest Girl Alive roundtable and its If I Tell You guide provide structured follow-up. NSVRC identifies screenings as a way to start conversations about sexual violence.
- For younger viewers: RAINN says If I Tell You is best suited for ages 12 and older and that sexual violence is not depicted on screen. Its guide covers trusted adults, consent, trauma, grooming, allyship, and responding with care. See the RAINN page for If I Tell You.
- Confirm where to watch: availability changes by service and region. Check current local listings; older collaboration pages are not reliable confirmation of present streaming access.
Content notes and support
These subjects may be distressing, and a viewing guide cannot predict what will feel difficult for an individual. Consider sharing content notes in advance, making it easy to step away, and offering confidential support information without requiring anyone to disclose personal experiences. RAINN’s guidance for storytellers is to avoid sensationalism and stereotypes and to navigate conversations about survivors and sexual violence thoughtfully.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, you are not alone. RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline offers free, confidential, 24/7 support in English and en Español. Call 800.656.HOPE (4673), chat at RAINN.org/hotline, or text “HOPE” to 64673.
