First time watching? Use release order: Underworld (2003), Evolution (2006), Rise of the Lycans (2009), Awakening (2012), then Blood Wars (2016/2017). For a timeline rewatch, start with Rise of the Lycans, then watch the other four in release order. The main saga contains five live-action feature films; Endless War is an optional animated tie-in.
Release order: the best choice for most first-time viewers
Release order preserves the way the mythology, character relationships and historical revelations were originally introduced. It also begins with Selene’s modern storyline instead of a prequel led mainly by different characters.

- Underworld (2003)
Selene, a vampire Death Dealer, investigates a Lycan pursuit of Michael Corvin and uncovers the larger mystery behind the secret vampire–Lycan war. It establishes the setting, factions and central relationships, making it the clearest entry point. Check U.S. viewing options. - Underworld: Evolution (2006)
This is a direct sequel, not a prequel. It follows the first film’s consequences while expanding the origins and bloodlines of both supernatural species. It belongs immediately after Underworld in either practical viewing sequence. Check U.S. viewing options. - Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)
The historical prequel focuses on Lucian, Sonja and Viktor and shows how the centuries-old feud began. Selene is not the lead, so placing it third lets a new viewer understand the backstory after meeting the modern protagonists. See Sony’s synopsis and purchase links. - Underworld: Awakening (2012)
After Selene’s imprisonment and a substantial time jump, humans have discovered vampires and Lycans and are trying to eradicate both. This is a continuation of the modern storyline, not a prequel. See Sony’s synopsis and purchase links. - Underworld: Blood Wars (2016/2017)
The latest released mainline film pits Selene against Lycan forces and rival vampire factions. It premiered internationally in 2016 and opened theatrically in the United States in January 2017, so references use either year. Check U.S. viewing options.

Which order should you choose?
| Viewer | Recommended order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First-time viewer | Release order | Introduces Selene and the mythology as audiences first encountered them. |
| Franchise rewatch | Chronological order | Begins with the historical origin of the vampire–Lycan conflict. |
| Selene-focused marathon | Release order | Follows her modern storyline without opening on a different lead cast. |
| History and lore-focused viewer | Chronological order | Starts with Lucian, Sonja and Viktor’s backstory. |
| Completionist | Release order plus Endless War | Keeps the five features clear while adding the animated tie-in separately. |
Does Endless War count as a sixth movie?
No. Underworld: Endless War is a three-part animated, short-form project associated with Awakening, not a sixth live-action theatrical feature. It is optional supplementary material and is not required to understand the five films. Because a definitive canonical placement for every segment is not clearly established by an official source, watch it separately or after Rise of the Lycans rather than inserting it into the core list. SlashFilm’s overview discusses its animated tie-in status.
How many Underworld movies are there?
There are five main live-action feature films: Underworld, Evolution, Rise of the Lycans, Awakening and Blood Wars. “Five” excludes the animated Endless War shorts. No confirmed sixth-film release date is established here, so Blood Wars is the latest released mainline entry.

Practical buying and subscription choices
- Already subscribed: Check each title individually; no single base service is established here as a permanent home for all five films.
- Watching one film: A digital rental is usually more practical than adding a monthly service.
- Repeated rewatches: Compare a digital bundle or five-film disc collection with buying titles separately.
- Maximum reliability: Digital ownership or physical discs avoid dependence on rotating streaming licenses.
- Collector priority: Compare DVD, Blu-ray and 4K editions for included films and preferred picture quality before purchasing.
