No. HBO Max is still operating as a streaming service as of August 18, 2026. The confusion comes from a sequence of brand changes—HBO Max became Max in 2023 and Max became HBO Max again in 2025—plus regional app migrations, title removals and ordinary device problems. Warner Bros. Discovery continues to describe HBO Max as an active, expanding global service.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q1 2026 shareholder materials describe HBO Max as a global streaming product and report more than 140 million subscribers across the company’s defined streaming categories. That is a broader company metric, not a count of unique U.S. HBO Max customers. The company said it was targeting more than 150 million global streaming subscribers by the end of 2026 (Q1 2026 shareholder letter).
What happened to the HBO Max name?
May 2023: HBO Max became Max
Warner Bros. Discovery launched Max in the United States on May 23, 2023. The company positioned it as a broader entertainment service combining HBO with Warner Bros., DC, children’s programming and unscripted shows associated with Discovery brands (launch announcement; Max launch details).
For existing customers, this was a migration and identity change—not the failure of the streaming business. The application, interface, plan names and some features could change, and the timing was not identical in every country.

Summer 2025: Max became HBO Max again
On May 14, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Max would be renamed HBO Max during summer 2025 (official announcement). The stated goal was to restore the HBO name’s premium entertainment identity.
That reversal reflects a change in branding strategy: the 2023 name emphasized a wider general-entertainment offering, while the 2025 name put HBO’s established premium brand back at the front. It was not a second shutdown.
2026: The service continues
Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2025 annual filing describes HBO Max as an active streaming product and reports 131.6 million total Streaming subscribers at December 31, 2025. “Streaming subscribers” is the company’s defined, broader category and should not be read as a precise HBO Max-only U.S. count (2025 annual filing).

The company’s 2026 materials also say HBO Max launched in additional European markets and continued to scale globally (Q1 2026 filing).

- Confirm that HBO Max is offered in your country or current travel location.
- Check the official supported-device information for your model and operating-system version.
- Update the HBO Max app and the device software.
- Force-close the app, then open it again.
- Restart the television, streaming player, phone or tablet.
- Test the internet connection and disable any VPN or proxy.
- Sign out of HBO Max and sign back in.
- Reinstall the official app if your device allows it.
- Check who bills you: HBO Max directly, an app store, a cable or internet provider, a mobile carrier or another partner.
- If the error continues, use the support links for “Something went wrong,” device setup, VPN messages, payment and subscription issues in the HBO Max help center.
A device can lose compatibility while HBO Max remains fully available on newer hardware. A VPN can also create a location error that looks like an outage.

Does HBO Max still include Discovery programming?
In the United States, the help center says HBO Max includes HBO programming, Max Originals, selected Warner Bros. and DC titles, and programming from brands such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Magnolia and Discovery (current availability and plans). Warner Bros. Discovery’s annual filing also describes HBO Max as carrying HBO, Warner Bros., DC, Harry Potter-related programming, CNN and unscripted Discovery-related content (annual filing).
That does not guarantee that every Discovery+ title appears in every market. Catalog rights vary by country and can change.

Content availability and service availability are separate. A title may leave because a license expired, regional rights changed, a promotional window ended, a studio licensed it elsewhere, the catalog was optimized, or the title moved between services. It may later return.

An unofficial “leaving soon” list is not proof of a platform shutdown. Check the service itself or an official notice before treating a removal as permanent.
Does Warner Bros. Discovery’s corporate split mean HBO Max is ending?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced a plan to separate its businesses into two companies. The proposed Warner Bros.-focused company would include Warner Bros., HBO, HBO Max and related studio assets, while Discovery Global would include many linear networks and other businesses (separation announcement). A follow-up announcement outlined proposed post-separation names and leadership (company update).
The company described the separation as expected for mid-2026, subject to conditions and approvals. Corporate ownership and organization are different from ending the consumer streaming product. The related filing lists risks and uncertainties, so future arrangements should not be treated as final until completed (investor-relations notice).
How to check a future shutdown rumor
A credible report should identify an official Warner Bros. Discovery announcement, an HBO Max support notice, a filing that says the product is being discontinued, or a specific country, device or billing partner affected. It should also provide a concrete date and explain what subscribers must do about access, refunds or migration.
