Choose Twitch if live sessions and a Twitch-native community are the center of your work; choose YouTube if livestreaming is one part of a broader mix of live broadcasts, long-form videos, and Shorts. Neither platform is proven to guarantee better discovery or earnings for every creator. The practical choice depends on your format, how you want viewers to interact, your monetization stage, and whether you plan to stream on both.
How to decide between Twitch and YouTube
| Your priority | Better starting fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Live sessions and a live-native community | Twitch | Twitch is centered on live streaming. Consider it if the live session itself and the community around it are your main product. |
| Live streams alongside an ongoing video library | YouTube | YouTube supports live video and chat as well as long-form video and Shorts, so broadcasts can sit alongside other publishing formats. |
| Vertical and horizontal live formats | Compare the formats you can produce on each platform | YouTube documents horizontal and vertical live formats with differing feature support. Twitch announced Dual Format streaming for all streamers in June 2026; feature availability and details can change. |
| Monetization | Compare eligibility and features, not just thresholds | Twitch distinguishes access to certain tools from payout eligibility. YouTube has an earlier-access tier in eligible regions and a separate threshold for full ad revenue. |
These are starting points, not guarantees. Community habits vary by niche, and the cited platform features do not establish a universal winner for audience growth or income. If you already publish videos, compare how each platform fits the work you are willing to keep doing after a live session ends.
Community and content: where does your work belong?
When Twitch may fit
Twitch is a natural option when the live event is the main experience: viewers arrive to watch in real time and interact around the session. The platform’s live focus may suit creators who want to build their regular programming and community there.
When YouTube may fit
YouTube may be a more natural fit if you want livestreams to sit alongside edited videos or Shorts on the same channel. Consider whether you will actually publish and maintain those other formats: a platform’s range of formats is useful only if it matches your plan and capacity.

Do not assume that a platform’s culture or discovery patterns are the same in every category. Use your own channel analytics and audience feedback to assess where your viewers watch, return, and participate.
Monetization: tools, eligibility, and payouts are different questions
Twitch tools and payout eligibility
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Twitch said eligible streamers globally gained access to tools including Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Channel Points. It also said Partner or Affiliate status is still required for payouts. Access to tools should not be mistaken for being eligible to receive payouts.

YouTube’s earlier-access tier and full ad-revenue threshold
YouTube’s expanded Partner Program can provide earlier access to eligible fan-funding and Shopping features in available regions. Its overview gives the usual entry threshold as 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Country availability and feature-specific eligibility apply; meeting the threshold does not by itself make every feature available everywhere. YouTube’s expanded YPP overview.

For full ad-revenue eligibility, YouTube’s current YPP overview lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, alongside policy and account requirements and channel review. Livestream hours from streams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count toward that watch-hour threshold. Check the current requirements for your channel and region. These programs use different criteria and offer different features, so their numbers are not like-for-like measures of how quickly a creator will earn. Neither threshold predicts actual income.

Formats and production: match the platform to your setup
YouTube’s live-streaming help documents horizontal and vertical formats, with some feature support differing by format. Twitch announced Dual Format streaming for all streamers on June 17, 2026, and 2K (1440p) streaming for Partners and Affiliates. Treat these as feature and eligibility details, not proof that one service will look better for your specific stream. Check the platforms’ current help and feature pages before building a workflow around a particular option.
Twitch’s announcement also says that 70% of new Twitch viewers come to Twitch on mobile. That is Twitch’s own published figure from June 2026, not an independently verified industry statistic; it may be a reason to consider mobile viewing, but it does not establish what your particular audience uses. Twitch’s Dual Format and 2K announcement. For YouTube’s current format and feature information, see YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Can you stream on Twitch and YouTube at the same time?
Twitch’s current Terms of Service allow simulcasting, subject to conditions. The Twitch experience must not be worse than the experience on another service; you must not direct Twitch viewers to leave for the simulcast; and you must not combine activity from other platforms on the Twitch stream. Read the current terms and check any signed agreement that applies to you before simulcasting, because an agreement may affect what you can do. Twitch Terms of Service.
Even where simulcasting is permitted, it adds work: you need to monitor and moderate activity across services and decide how to serve both audiences without making one experience feel secondary. That is a practical production consideration, not an additional Twitch rule. If managing two chats and separate platform requirements would distract from the session, starting on one platform may be simpler.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Twitch as your first test if live sessions and building a live-native community are your priority.
- Choose YouTube as your first test if you intend to publish long-form videos or Shorts as well as livestreams.
- Check monetization details against your region, channel status, and the specific feature you want; distinguish tool access from payout eligibility.
- Check format support against the resolution, orientation, and production workflow you can sustain.
- Simulcast only after reviewing the current Twitch terms and any agreement that applies to your account, and account for the extra moderation workload.
- Compare your own results—returning viewers, participation, watch time, and revenue—rather than assuming either platform will deliver superior growth.
