Then test administrator access, close software that may conflict with the game-capture hook, check GPU assignment on laptops, and try Window Capture for games that cannot be hooked. A black preview only while a fullscreen game is minimized may be normal; test a recording while the game is active before changing settings.
1. Check the Game Capture source and target
Game Capture is an OBS source for capturing DirectX or OpenGL games on Windows. In OBS, select the scene, find Sources, and open the properties for the Game Capture source. OBS’s initial options can generally remain at their defaults while you diagnose the source.
- Start the game and leave it running.
- In the Game Capture properties, choose fullscreen capture for a game running fullscreen, or specific-window capture and select the active game window. Keep the game active while selecting it.
- If you regularly switch between games, OBS also offers a hotkey capture mode.
- Return to the scene, make sure the Game Capture source is present and visible, and bring the game to the foreground to test.

2. Try administrator access if the game requires it
Some games require OBS Studio to run with elevated permissions to capture correctly. Close OBS, relaunch it using Run as administrator, and test again with the game open. This is a game-dependent check, not a setting every user needs to change.

3. Remove likely software conflicts temporarily
Game Capture uses a hook to capture a game, and another program trying to interact with the same game can interfere. Close overlays, FPS counters, performance-monitoring displays, and other recording or capture applications one at a time, testing the source after each change.
- OBS specifically calls out MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner as common conflicts. Other overlays may also interfere.
- If the problem persists, check whether your antivirus or firewall is blocking OBS and allow OBS where appropriate. Do not disable or remove security software indiscriminately.

4. Distinguish a minimized-game preview from a failed capture
Some fullscreen games stop rendering when you Alt+Tab away. In that situation, OBS’s preview may go black while the game is minimized even though capture works while the game is active. Test by recording while the game remains in the foreground, then review the recording; alternatively, use a second monitor to watch OBS without minimizing the game.
For certain titles, OBS recommends switching the game to windowed or borderless fullscreen and capturing it with Window Capture instead. That is a compatibility workaround, not evidence that every black Game Capture preview has the same cause.

5. Check the game’s graphics API and compatibility
OBS reports that some DirectX 12 games may crash with OBS or show frame problems. If the game offers a DirectX 11 option, try it and retest. OBS’s examples include switching Fortnite from DX12 to DX11 when problems occur, and using Window Capture as an alternative for Counter-Strike 2 or Destiny 2. These are examples, not a complete compatibility list; follow the current advice for the specific game.
Older games and emulators may also be incompatible with modern game-hooking methods. OBS’s documentation notes that “There are a very small number of games that do not work with Game Capture.” For a title that cannot be hooked, proceed to the source alternatives below.

6. Check GPU assignment on a laptop or multi-GPU PC
A laptop may use an integrated GPU for desktop work and a discrete GPU for games. OBS says Game Capture may fail if OBS runs on the integrated GPU while the game runs on the discrete GPU. On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, and Windows 11, use Windows’ graphics settings to assign OBS to the high-performance GPU for Game or Window Capture. Restart OBS after changing the assignment and test again. If the mismatch remains, check that the game is assigned to a compatible GPU as well.
Follow the Windows-specific steps in the OBS Laptop Troubleshooting guide; the exact graphics-settings labels can vary by Windows version and device. This GPU-assignment advice concerns Game or Window Capture, not the separate Display Capture method described next.

7. Choose an alternative capture source when necessary
Use the source that matches what you need to capture. Game Capture is intended for Windows games and is described by OBS as efficient, but some games do not work with it. Window Capture targets an application window and is OBS’s documented alternative for certain incompatible titles. Display Capture captures the display rather than only the game window, so it may include other visible desktop content.

For the cross-GPU Display Capture method, use OBS’s laptop guide. It says to try the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection fails. This is a Display Capture workaround with its own requirements; it is not a general fix for a blank Game Capture source.
8. If the source is still black
- Black only after Alt+Tab: Keep the game active and review a test recording before diagnosing a capture failure.
- Black only in one game: Try windowed or borderless fullscreen with Window Capture; if available, test the game’s DX11 mode.
- Black on a laptop or multi-GPU computer: Align OBS and game GPU assignments, restart OBS, and test again.
- Black after overlays or monitoring tools start: Close likely hook conflicts individually; check security software permissions without disabling protection indiscriminately.
- Trying to capture a console: A capture card is a separate workflow. OBS describes connecting the device through a Video Capture Source. Capturing a console remote-play application window is another option, but depends on a sufficiently fast network connection. Neither is a general repair for PC Game Capture.
