If a Twitch VOD keeps jumping to the beginning, rewinding, or looping, first check whether it happens with one recording or with every video. A single VOD that fails at the same timestamp on several devices may be damaged or unavailable; problems across multiple VODs are more likely to involve Twitch, your network, browser, or app. Start with the quick tests below before clearing data or changing advanced settings.
Identify what “restarting” means
The pattern helps narrow down the cause:
| What happens | What to check first |
|---|---|
| The VOD returns to 0:00 or reloads | Test another VOD, then refresh the player and check your browser or app session. |
| Playback jumps back several minutes | Note whether it follows buffering, switching apps, or locking your phone; then test another network. |
| The same short section repeats | Try that timestamp on another device. A repeated failure at the same point can indicate a problem with that recording or video segment. |
| It restarts after an advertisement | Test a different VOD, browser, and network. An ad-related extension conflict or a general player reload can look similar; the timing alone does not prove the ad caused it. |
| It rewinds after you lock your phone or switch apps | Test playback with Twitch open in the foreground. This points toward the mobile app’s background or playback state, though reports of this behavior are anecdotal. |
| It fails mainly at high quality | Set quality to Auto or temporarily select a lower resolution. If that helps, the connection may be unstable at the selected bitrate. |
First rule out Twitch or a single VOD
- Check Twitch Status. Look at the components for Video (Watching) and Web. If there is an active incident, wait for service recovery before reinstalling apps or changing device settings. The incident history can help you see whether a reported problem is recent. A normal status page does not rule out a problem affecting a particular VOD or route.
- Try another VOD from the same channel, then one from another channel. Also test a live stream. If only one recording fails, do not assume your browser or internet connection is at fault.
- Open the problem VOD on another device and, if possible, another network. If it fails at the same timestamp across devices and networks while other videos work, the recording or a section of it is the stronger suspect.
| Test result | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| One VOD fails everywhere | The recording may be damaged, incomplete, restricted, or affected by a server-side problem. |
| Every VOD fails in one browser | Browser compatibility, extensions, site data, decoding, or DRM. |
| Twitch videos fail only on one network | Wi-Fi, router, DNS, VPN, filtering, ISP routing, or carrier conditions. |
| Only the mobile app fails | App data, app version, or device playback state. |
| Playback fails only after screen lock or app switching | Mobile background playback or app lifecycle behavior. |
Quick fixes for PC and mobile
1. Restart the player
On a computer, refresh the Twitch page. On a phone or tablet, fully close and reopen the Twitch app. Then open the VOD again from the channel’s Videos tab rather than relying on an old player tab. Test a second VOD to see whether the problem follows the recording.
2. Set video quality to Auto or lower it temporarily
In the player, select the Settings gear, open Quality, and choose Auto. If playback still buffers or jumps, try a lower setting such as 720p or 480p. If lower quality works, that is useful evidence of a throughput or stability issue; it does not necessarily mean you must always watch at that setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTwitch publishes approximate download-speed guidance for playback: 1440p60 / 2K, 9–18 Mbps or higher; 1080p60, 7–12 Mbps; 720p60, 3–6 Mbps; 480p, 1.1–3 Mbps; and 360p, 0.7–1.5 Mbps. These are guidance ranges, not guarantees. Packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, latency, or competing traffic can interrupt playback even when a speed test reports a high number. See Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guidance.

3. Try another network
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi-Fi. If available, test a different Wi-Fi network. Temporarily disconnect a VPN, proxy, or traffic-filtering tool as a test. If Twitch works on another network, investigate the original network’s router, filtering, ISP route, or mobile-plan conditions rather than repeatedly reinstalling Twitch.
Some mobile plans limit video-streaming speed or quality. Twitch’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some operators, including T-Mobile and Mint Mobile, may cap streaming around 1.5 Mbps—generally consistent with 480p playback. Plans and limits can change, and a cap does not by itself prove the cause of a restart. Test over Wi-Fi and try a lower quality first.

Fixes for a PC browser
Use an updated, supported browser
Twitch lists the latest two versions of Chrome and Firefox, and the latest versions of Edge, Safari, Opera, and Opera GX as supported. Because those versions change, update through your browser’s built-in About or Check for updates page instead of relying on a fixed version number. See Twitch’s supported-browser guidance.

Open the VOD in a private or incognito window: Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome or Edge, or Ctrl + Shift + P in Firefox. You can also try another supported browser. If playback works there, the issue is more likely tied to your normal browser profile. Private browsing is only an isolation test; it may not disable every extension or security feature.

Temporarily disable extensions
Turn off extensions that can alter video or requests, especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, Twitch-enhancement tools, video-speed controls, downloaders, and player-control extensions. Disable them together for the test. If the VOD works, turn them back on one at a time until you identify the conflict. Re-enable extensions that are not responsible.
Clear Twitch site data—not all browser data
After testing extensions, clear the cache and cookies or site data for twitch.tv, then close and restart the browser, sign in again, and retest. Use the browser’s site-specific data controls if available. Clearing all browser data can sign you out of unrelated websites and remove other preferences. Removing local site data can help with stale or corrupted browser state, but cannot repair a defective recording on Twitch’s side.

Toggle hardware acceleration for decoding problems
If you see error 3000 or suspect a video-decoding problem, test hardware acceleration rather than assuming it should always be off:
Recommended Free Tools
- Chrome and Chromium-based browsers: Open Settings, search for hardware acceleration, toggle Use hardware acceleration when available, and relaunch the browser.
- Firefox: Open Settings, go to General, scroll to Performance, and toggle Use hardware acceleration when available. Restart Firefox.
Labels can vary by browser version. If the change makes no difference or playback gets worse, restore the original setting. Updating the browser and GPU driver can also help with decoding problems; do not change acceleration settings when there is no indication that decoding is involved.

Check DRM only for protected-content errors
If the player shows error 7005, check that your browser allows protected content or DRM playback. The setting’s name and location vary by browser—for example, Chrome and Edge have protected-content settings, while Firefox has a control for DRM-controlled content. Use the browser’s settings search if needed, and consult Twitch’s error guidance. There is little reason to change DRM settings when no protected-content error appears.
Test without a VPN or traffic filter
A VPN, proxy, security filter, DNS filter, or managed network can disrupt video requests or send them along an unreliable route. Disconnect it briefly to test. If that resolves the issue and you need the tool, try another server or an available Twitch exception or split-tunneling option. Do not leave security protections disabled as a permanent fix. DNS changes are not a universal Twitch remedy and should not be the first step.

- Force-close and reopen Twitch. Then check the app store for an update and restart the phone.
- Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data, and try Auto or a lower video quality. If the VOD works only in the foreground, keep the app open during a test before changing other settings.
- Clear the app cache. On many Android phones, go to Settings → Apps (or Applications) → Twitch → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear cache. Menu names differ by manufacturer and Android version.
- Use Clear storage/data only as a later reset. It is more disruptive than clearing cache and may remove local app data or require you to sign in again.
- Reinstall only if simpler steps fail. If you reinstall, sign in and test a VOD in the foreground before investigating background behavior.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad
- Force-close Twitch and reopen it. Check the App Store for an update; installing available iOS updates can also rule out an outdated device software issue.
- Test playback with Twitch open in the foreground. If the VOD rewinds only after you lock the screen, switch apps, use picture-in-picture, or cast to another display, the issue is more specifically tied to that playback state.
- Test the same VOD in Safari and on another network. If Safari works but the app does not, focus on the app; if the same timestamp fails across devices, focus on the recording or service.
- If restarting and updating do not help, remove and reinstall Twitch. If available, Offload App is another iOS option. Reinstallation resets the app locally; it cannot repair a server-side VOD problem.
Some users have reported VOD rewinds during background audio or after screen locking, but community reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal Twitch bug. Examples include a report of background-listening rewinds and another report involving background playback. Treat foreground playback as a diagnostic test, not proof that a particular phone setting is at fault.
What Twitch error codes suggest
| Error or symptom | Likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | Network or playback compatibility | Try Auto quality, restart the router or player, disable extensions, and test another network. |
| 3000 | Video decoding | Update the browser, test hardware acceleration, update the GPU driver, and disable extensions. |
| 7005 | DRM or protected-content playback | Check the browser’s DRM setting, use a supported browser, and disable extensions for a test. |
| No code; repeated restarts | Session, site/app data, network, or the VOD | Compare another VOD, device, and network before making advanced changes. |
| Repeated loop at the same timestamp | A particular VOD or video segment | Test that point on another device and report the URL and timestamp if it persists. |
| Rewind after screen lock | Mobile background playback state | Test with Twitch in the foreground, then compare the app with a mobile browser. |
These categories follow Twitch’s published playback troubleshooting information. An error code narrows the investigation; it does not prove that one particular cause is responsible.
When to stop troubleshooting your device
If one VOD repeatedly loops or fails at the same timestamp on multiple devices and networks, further cache clearing or reinstalling is unlikely to fix the recording itself. Check whether the creator has a Highlight, upload, or alternate recording available. Otherwise, report the issue to Twitch with the VOD URL, channel, exact timestamp, whether it restarts or loops, device and operating system, browser or app and version, network type, and what tests you have already tried. A screenshot or screen recording can help show the failure. For browser problems, Twitch’s support guidance also identifies browser name and version, operating system, reproduction steps, screenshots, and browser-console logs as useful escalation details.
