They arrived with tvOS 26.4, released on March 24, 2026: Genius Browse for cross-service discovery, Continuous Audio Connection for smoother HDMI audio transitions, and easier subtitle-style controls.
They are software features, so you do not need to buy a new Apple TV 4K simply to get them. Update your existing device through Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software, then install the latest tvOS 26 version offered.
The three tvOS 26.4 features
The “three features” description comes from 9to5Mac’s coverage, not from Apple presenting tvOS 26.4 as an official three-feature package. Apple’s software-update history also lists an audio playback fix and the removal of the standalone iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps.
- Genius Browse: themed recommendations in the Apple TV app.
- Continuous Audio Connection: an HDMI audio option designed to smooth transitions between formats.
- Subtitle customization: more visible style presets and controls in Apple’s standard video player.
1. Genius Browse makes discovery more deliberate
Open the Apple TV app, select the Home tab, and scroll down. Genius Browse presents rotating collections built around themes such as date-night recommendations or adaptations of books. Select a title to explore additional recommendations related to it.

The feature can include programming from Apple’s service and supported third-party streaming apps. That makes it more useful than a recommendation row limited to one service, particularly when you know you want to watch something but have no particular title in mind.
There are important limits. Genius Browse is not a new streaming subscription and does not provide access to every recommended title through one plan. The services shown depend on your region, installed or connected apps, and the apps’ integration with the Apple TV app. Collections and recommendations may also vary by profile and change over time.
2. Continuous Audio Connection targets format-switching problems
To find the setting, go to:
Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Format → HDMI Output
Continuous Audio Connection uses a Dolby MAT connection to create more seamless transitions when Apple TV moves between formats such as Dolby Atmos and stereo. It is aimed at the brief pause, pop, silence, or repeated receiver-mode change that some people experience when switching between programmes.

It is worth trying if you use a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar, AV receiver, or Sonos-based HDMI setup and notice interruptions during format changes. However, it is not a guaranteed fix for every audio problem and is not a Sonos-exclusive feature.

One possible source of confusion is the receiver’s display. Older receivers may show an Atmos-style indicator more often when Dolby MAT is being used. That indicator alone does not prove that every source has been converted incorrectly into Dolby Atmos.
If enabling the option produces unusual behaviour, unexpected output, or new compatibility problems, turn it off and compare the result. Avoid changing several unrelated audio settings at once, since that makes the cause harder to identify. 3. Subtitle styling is easier to find
When a programme is playing in Apple’s standard video player:

- Swipe up on the Siri Remote clickpad.
- Select Subtitles.
- Choose Style.
- Select a preset or choose Manage Styles.
Reported presets include Classic, Large Text, Outline Text, and Transparent Background. Larger lettering, outlines, or a different background can improve readability for viewers with low vision, dyslexia, visual-processing difficulties, or poor contrast between subtitles and the image.
The main change is discoverability: subtitle appearance controls are now easier to reach during playback instead of being associated primarily with Accessibility settings. The controls are documented in Apple’s Apple TV playback guide.

Do not expect identical controls in every streaming app. Applications that use their own video players may provide separate subtitle settings or may not expose Apple’s style menu at all.
What else arrived with tvOS 26?
These three tvOS 26.4 additions are not the whole tvOS 26 story. The wider release introduced:
- A Liquid Glass redesign across the Apple TV interface.
- A redesigned Apple TV app with cinematic poster artwork.
- More visible profile selection and personalization.
- Apple Music Sing support using an iPhone as a microphone on supported hardware.
- FaceTime improvements including Contact Posters and additional Live Caption languages.
- New Indian Aerial screen savers.
- The ability to designate an AirPlay-enabled speaker as Apple TV’s permanent speaker.
Apple’s tvOS 26 announcement and Apple TV User Guide explain the broader release. Feature availability can vary by language, region, local laws, hardware, and connected equipment.

No. These are software features, not a new Apple TV 4K hardware launch. Apple’s tvOS 26 user guide says tvOS 26 can be updated on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models, although individual features may behave differently depending on the model, app, region, and audio equipment.
Do not confuse general tvOS compatibility with every feature’s requirements. For example, Apple Music Sing’s iPhone-as-microphone feature requires an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), an iPhone 11 or later, and current software. That requirement does not establish that a newer Apple TV is necessary for Genius Browse, Continuous Audio Connection, or subtitle styling.

A hardware upgrade may still make sense if you own an Apple TV HD and want 4K or HDR playback, have an older Apple TV 4K and want newer performance, need better gaming support, or have a television, receiver, or soundbar that limits your desired formats. But the three tvOS 26.4 features alone are not a strong reason to replace a compatible Apple TV.
Should you update?
For most owners, yes. tvOS 26.4 addressed an audio playback issue, and later tvOS 26 releases added performance and stability improvements. Install the latest version available for your device rather than stopping specifically at tvOS 26.4. Apple’s update history lists tvOS 26.4, 26.5, and 26.6 in the current release line documented there.
The most valuable feature depends on how you use Apple TV:
- For undecided viewers: Genius Browse can make cross-service discovery easier.
- For home-theater owners: Continuous Audio Connection is worth testing if format changes cause silence or renegotiation.
- For accessibility and readability: subtitle styling offers the most immediate practical benefit.
- For stable existing setups: update for security, fixes, and general improvements, but do not expect a dramatic hardware-level transformation.
Before buying anything, check the compatibility of your Apple TV, television, HDMI chain, soundbar or receiver, and any connected streaming apps. The update is useful, but it does not turn every device or service into a fully integrated Apple TV experience.
